Something a bit dissappointing about the film

Did you see the scenes that were "homages" to other movies?

* The credits being shown exactly in the style of MICAHEL CLAYTON

* Sona's slow motion walk in a white outfit and hairstyle that echoes Natalie Portman in the final scenes of CLOSER http://farm1.static.flickr.com/2/2007659_75aacbfe29.jpg

* The background behind Sona's scene with Aamir Khan, the 20s scene with those lovely cars and her highly stylised hairdo was very similar to one of the earlier scenes in EVITA with Madonna.

* The scene where Sona is shot under the bedsheet is reminiscent of one of Claire Danes' scene in ROMEO+JULIET

* The costume and choreography of Bhaware is somewhat similar to MOULIN ROUGE's chamma chamma, which in itself was inspired by hindi movies, but there's something about the very stiff way some of the dancers held their arms out and swayed side to side - it just screamed out MOULIN ROUGE to me. Oh, and the way the girl is suspended in that ring was very much the way Nicole Kidman's character was suspended in that movie.

There were others but I'd have to watch the movie again to list them. And I know this sort of listing of comparisons happens all the time on HIndi movie web posts but I really would like others to add what they spot more out of curiosity to know than out of criticism.

Even I spotted some of these homages... specifically Michael Clayton coz it's still fresh in my memory..

But I couldn't understand why the thread is named as "Something a bit dissappointing about the film" ???!!!

reply

Well, I called the thread "Something a bit dissappointing about the film" because that's what it was to me.

I thought the movie was so refreshing and original in so many ways that I felt these scenes were distracting me from following the movie. The moviemaker holds the audience's attention with a very fine silken thread and if anyone in the audience thinks, "Hmm that looks familiar" and starts wondering where they've seen it before then that thread just breaks and the moviemaker has done the "homage" scene to the detriment of their own movie.

Well.. for me its always fun when some other movie (generally a very good movie) is referred...

I don't think that that was a cheap way to end the movie... in fact, Konkona carried that scene amazingly.. It definitely wasn't that they were stealing the scene... there is a huge difference between stealing a scene and deliberately paying homage/refering to some great movies... And I am damn sure that Zoya intended to the latter...

great movie

I agree Vishwas. The scene was clearly a well-executed and acted homage, and not a cheap ripoff. It's hard to explain the difference, but it's there.

Can you point out where exactly these are? Add minutes/seconds.

Dont have the time to do all of them but I will do the Evita one , which I think most people wouldn't be able to track down:

The movie scene in LuckByChance that starts at 6min 46secs closely resembles the way the song "Buenos Aires" is shown in the movie Evita - background, costumes, hairstyles (not to mention that Madonna's character is also someone trying to make her way in show business).

Here's an online video of the Evita song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9B8vBLrTCY be sure to watch till around the 1.03 minute point.
