Doesn't anybody realize this is based on another Oz novel?

This is based on the Oz book Dorothy Of Oz written by Roger S. Baum. The grandson of the author of the original 14 Oz books L. Frank Baum.

Actually, Roger is L. Frank Baum's great grandson. Yes, a number of people are cognizant of the fact that this is based on a book by that guy. What's your point? Is knowing that "Legends of Oz" is adapted from a book somehow supposed to improve the public's opinion of the movie? So what if Roger happens to be related to L. Frank Baum? Does that automatically legitimize his books or this production?

reply

No it's not that. I just didn't want people to think this was just an Oz movie that was made out of the blue like Oz The Great and Powerful. I didn't want people to think this was a movie that wasn't based on original material. Even Return To Oz was based on two Oz novels by L. Frank Baum. The Marvelous Land Of Oz and Ozma Of Oz. My point was I wanted people to realize this was a movie based off a Oz novel and not something that was made up off the top of somebody's head.

Again, so what if it's based on a book or not? Whether the idea for this movie came from an author or a screenwriter is irrelevant. Anybody can write an Oz book these days. The fact that the book in question is by L. Frank Baum's great-grandson means nothing; having the name Baum doesn't make Roger an official Oz "historian." This movie and the book it's based on are no more an authentic part of the Oz canon than Oz the Great and Powerful.

Now, if you were talking about Return to Oz, and someone's only complaint about that film was that it's so different from the Judy Garland movie, then you'd have a valid reason for bringing up the books. But when the book isn't by L. Frank Baum, I'm not sure why we're supposed to care.

His books are so bad though...I have a couple of them in my Oz collection autographed and I feel a little dirty having them. They are so bad.

The fact is that, among hardcore Oz fans, Roger Baum is looked on as a poseur, a second rate hack who is trying to cash in on his family name. Had the makers of "Legends..." bothered to do any research among Oz fans, they probably would have discovered this. Tragically, they did not. As a result the odds of another Oz movie being made for at least a decade are painfully slim.

So what?
