My experience with a burning car

About two weeks ago, my local fire department held a demostration, in which they torched a car and put it out.

The only fuel used to burn the car was gasoline, and a flare was used to light it. There were two oddities that might interest CTers.

1) Profuse black smoke. In 9/11 Mysteries, black smoke should be a sign of a starved fire. I was standing maybe fifty feet away, and I could feel the heat. the fire didn't appear too small, either.

2) Explosions. Two of them, eardrum rattlers. I'll leave it at that. Remember, no explosives were present.

It was actually quite fun to watch. If I remember, I'll scan the photos after I develop them (unfortunately, they'll be in "artistic" black and white.)

Holy crap, this thread's completely slipped my mind. Nevermind, the photos have been developed, the silver gelatin prints have been scanned, and everything resized via Photoshop.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v733/Fenris_the_Wolf/car1.jpg Two volunteers preparing the car for the display. Remember, the only fuel used was gasoline. For safety reasons, nonessential fluids have been drained from the engine.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v733/Fenris_the_Wolf/car2.jpg This photo was taken about ten minutes after ignition. Earlier, flames were shooting out of all windows and from under the hood. Taken shortly after the first explosion. Two of the fuel cans are visible in the foreground.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v733/Fenris_the_Wolf/car3.jpg About five minutes later. The second explosion was evidently enough to force the hood and front passenger door open. How is that possible without explosives?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v733/Fenris_the_Wolf/car4.jpg After half an hour with two engines, the the car was completely extinguished. Rather sobering, actually. The lawn is clearly visible where the floorboard used to be.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v733/Fenris_the_Wolf/car5.jpg This photo serves absolutely no informative purpose. I'm just a show-off.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v733/Fenris_the_Wolf/car6.jpg Special thanks to the volunteers who made this possible. Name of the fire department intentionally obscured.
