I thought that the composer was Joel Erikkson. he did the first one and a rumer said he did this one????

The composer for 2142 is Gregor Narholz, says so when you download the preorder exclusive sountrack and also here: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0003084/.
Most of it is quite good when maps are loading, the menu music also fits in very well.
I always felt that it might have been Basil Poledouris. It sounds so much like his style and could have been the last thing he did before he died (late 2006).
