Tim's Mutiny

Do you think he could have made it? Was he right to defy Russell.?

reply

No I don't. He seemed to be in pretty bad shape on the way down.

reply

If he reached the top he would have died there.

reply

I agree, and one climber said it as well, that if Tim had made it (and it's possible he could have) he would have snapped a few pics there...and died shortly thereafter.

A man who stands for nothing...will fall for anything.

reply

No, everyone agreed beforehand to let him make decisions since most people are half crazed by the time they get that far. He was probably so out of it he didn't know what he was doing. If I were Russell I wouldn't let him back on my expedition next year, he's shown he's a liability by not listening.

reply

well, he was only not obeying because of the lack of oxygen right? Which was partly caused by those Turkish people blocking the way. If feel kind of sad for Tim, I hope he'll make it next year.

reply

Not Turkish but Chinese in fact.

reply

I just watched that. No, he wouldn't have made it and he was completely, 100% in the wrong to defy Russell. Why go against expertise?

It was selfish, stupid and thoroughly unfair to the sherpas who were busting their butts to get him that far. Lack of oxygen or not, they narrowly avoided a horrific tragedy that would've been his and Gerard's faults.

Stupid. Stupidest thing I've ever seen. It made me angry, too. I felt nothing but anger for the foolish danger he put all those others in.

reply

He would have summitted, but that's only half the battle. Something like 80% of the fatalities actually occur on descent. He would have enjoyed a few minutes of glory at the top, but would have succumbed to the combined effects of exhaustion and lack of oxygen on the way down. He would have died on the mountain if he didn't turn around when he did.

I firmly believe that he should have been left on the mountain. I believe the only reason he was not was because he was part of this documentary. Tim is a rich *beep* period. This is a guy who is as arrogant as they come. Any sane person would never attempt Everest with the injuries he had suffered. He sould have been happy to have survived his motorcycle accident. That should have been enough of a sign to him to take life a bit easier and value his existence. Instead, he puts his desire to summit above the lives of the Sherpas and his fellow climbers. He's a liability, and I'll not be surprised to hear a news story of his dying on Everest within the next year or two. Mogens said it. "Bold climbers die. Smart climbers live."

I have no comment on what I think of him personally but the guy came back this year and was able to reach the summit. Not to mention he did it with a broken hand. Even if he heavily relied on sherpas to do it, he still did it which is pretty impressive considering his size and injuries (both present and past).

reply

Tim talked of other people not respecting the mountain, and not being worthy to be there. Pot meet kettle. Russel summed it up nicely, "the man is an idiot"

reply

Man... did u see the show? - Without the sherpas Tim would probably still be on Everest. Frozen.

reply

The question is why Russell allowed him to go at all after all those climbers got ahead of him. I have a sneaking feeling Russell didn't think Tim would make it, and let him go confident he would head back down. I can't prove that, but after that small army marched past, the experienced folks must have suspected Tim wouldn't make it.

reply

Irony on this things. The Denmark guy couldn't go up and had to go down, he is a real climber. Same as the others and the guy without legs.

reply

I agree, Tim would not have made it down alive if he would have gone to the summit. First of all he would not have even made it to the summit anyways. He would be passed out somewhere just short of it. Most of the deaths happen on the way down for this very reason. They over-do it and are totally exhausted and low on oxygen by the time they descent. It was very irritating listening to him and Gerard aruge with Russell and they almost killed themselves because of it. Personally I would have told the sherpas to just leave him before that. He doesn't need to put their lives in danger too. These sherpas earn every bit of my respect. They risk their lives dealing with idiot and stubborn climbers.

He did summit in season 2 on a broken hand. So did Mogens. I was happy for Mogens. Even though he did not summit in season 1, he had the common sense to know when to stop.

"It's mercy, compassion, and forgiveness I lack; not rationality."

reply

Highly doubtful Tim would have made it, and it's almost impossible that he would have made it down (alive). He seems like an assh*le to me. You've got to obey the leader, especially one as experienced and rational as this one. Nothing wrong with strong-willed people, but Tim put other people at risk. Pretty selfish, though I know the extreme altitude had some effect on him, made him even more of an assh*le.
