For a low budget CBC movie I thought they did a pretty good job. The film is essentially set around the beginning of the WHA and there is no Saskatchewan portion. There is very little about his time with the Red Wings.

I think Shanks did a good job of making Gordie human. When I think of Mr Hockey I think hockey god. This biopic showed some of his flaws. I mean being the success story he was and the age it was set in who wouldn't have a bit of an ego. His kids must have had a hard time of being in dads shadow.

This film is ultimately dedicated to his wife mrs hockey. I would say this is the weak point of this story. The actress who portrayed her is no doubt good at her craft, but I wonder if some scenes were edited out. She is a mix of a back room meddler and saint which just doesn't seem to make sense.

All in all Shanks, weird accent and all, carried this thing into OT and scored the winning goal.

the movie wasn't supposed to be about his entire career...it was supposed to be about his comeback at 45......that he had already retired, from the game, and he was playing again......

you know, I never knew that he had number nine......I didn't watch him all that much, because I was kind of young....and he was on a team that we didn't watch....being in Toronto...so..that was another reason....

but, I like that he had number nine.....the number of the first hockey great, Maurice rocket Richard....

I agree with you drake, I really couldnt' figure out his wife, at all....

I've been a Howe fan since the early 60's. The first time I saw him play at Maple Leaf Gardens the Wimgs were "edged" by the Leafs, 10-0. When he first joined the Wings he wore Number 16, In his second year, the team traded the plater who wore Number 9 to Chicago and Gordie inherited the number.

BTW, that player who was traded was Roy Conacher-most hockey historians may know him as the "Third" Conacher brother (behind Lionel and Charlie). The problem was that Roy spent his best hockey years fighting in WWII and never gets enough respect for his hockey ability and accomplishments.
