Jesus Christ American laws are completely draconian!

10+ years for drug trafficking for first time offenders?! More time served than rape?! That's completely barbaric.

I mean no wonder America is the leading country in incarcerations.

it's supposed to be a deterrent.

There were 5 kids that broke into someone's house, and he was home, and shot and killed one of the kids. The other 4 got sentences for felony murder ranging from 45-55 years, because it was their actions that started the whole thing.

It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog

I'm not following your story/analogy. Not sure how that was relevant to the federal min for drug offences unless you are just giving another example of how draconian the US laws are.

reply

Drug trafficking Thailand...death.

reply

Yeah but Thailand isn't a wealthy nation. The punishment for crimes in the US are much more aligned with those in the developing world.

reply

The laws are draconian for people caught with relatively small amounts. And I doubt they are a deterrent. There is demand, and money to be made. Drug addicts wouldn't steal if they could obtain drugs legally.
Competition would keep prices down.

Except there would be a lot more addicts.

Get me a bromide! And put some gin in it!

It's also that the system, as outlined in the film, appears open to much abuse. See someone you don't get along with, send them a package, tell the Feds they deal and voila....they get 10 years. It just seems simplistically bizarre!

What it does is remove the levels of guilt set by a judge. In these cases there's not usually much question as to whether or not the suspect is guilty. There was no way he could say he didn't recieve the drugs or have them in his possession along with the testimony from his dick friend. So what can a jury do but find him guilty. But by stating his case (throwing himself on the mercy of the court) he could hope that the judge would take the extenuating circumstances into account and suspend the sentence, greatly reduce it, give him probation etc. But with mandatory minimums, they can't do anything but what he law says.

And don't forget that the kid was caught with hundreds if not thousands of hits of ecstasy. That's huge. However. I find it hard to believe the DA would prosecute this kid. What's the benefit to them? They can reduce the charge or not prosecute. There's wiggle room there.

All drugs should be legalized.

alcohol and caffeine are ok but go forbid you want to indulge in opium or lsd? it is hypocritical.

Legalize meth!

You're joking, right?

reply

not at all

reply

Yes, as a Canadian this film serves as a deterrent for me to go on long visits in America.

Those foolish enough to move from canada to america increase the average I.Q. of both countries

reply

Yeah, there are far too many cases just like the one portrayed in the movie, only without the uber-heroic dad to come to the rescue.

We have by FAR the highest incarceration levels in the entire world and it is absolutely DRAINING money to keep this many people in prison, especially when most people are in for crimes that are not that bad. Its always the little guy that gets arrested, very few big timers.

Haters gonna hate
