Title translation?

Cna someone fluent in Swedish please translate the title? Somehow I don't believe the English title (Kidz in da Hood) is a literal translation...

NEW RULE: Anyone who says "It's Just a Movie" has no business posting at IMDb.

reply

well i would translate it to suburban kids rather, "förort" which means annex city, also called the suburbs :)

"Hood Brats" is my take. "ungar" is more condescending than "kids", so i think "brats" is a better match. Also "förort" in this case probably doesn't refer to middle class suburbs but rather the poor concrete projects built outside of swedish cities in the 60s-70s. The english slang word "hood" works well in that context. So, the official translation isn't horrible (except for the "z") but mine is better. :-P

reply

"Hood Brats" sound pretty negative and almost condescending, which the original title doesn't. "Ungar" can be condescending if used in a certain context, but doesn't have to be. "Suburban Kids" is a more fitting translation.

"Kidz in the Hood" is just plain wrong :S

reply

well the part stranslation is "förort" = "suburb" and "ungar" = "Kid" i wouldnt say brat as brat is the term for kids who are more spoiled etc.. and this is not what its about, so id say *Suburban Kids*

reply

The correct translation is: Suburban kids. not hood, not brats etc... i fully agree with, Niklasjireland.

reply

The translation 'suburban kids' is literal, but apparently the term itself is the current common-usage term for what used to be called 'gutter kids.'

reply

this movie should be called "Gutter Kids" and nothin else
here in sweden the word "förort(suburb)" ain't the same as in the rest of the world, the suburbs here are the bad neighbourhoods, n i think the swedes who has answered this thread should know that...
its like, when u live in the regular suburbs here in sweden u live in the city, nothin else, but if its a bad suburb, its the suburb.

The title (and the movie itself) is obviously a paraphrase of another Swedish movie, "Rännstensungar" (from 1944, remade in 1974), which literally translates into "Gutter Kids".

I'd say "Kidz In Da Hood" is probably the best translation of the title of this movie among the ones suggested here, even if it isn't literal. The literal translation "Suburban Kids" does not really work.

Oh, the suburbs in Sweden are bad neighbourhoods? I guess you've never been to Täby, Danderyd, Lidingö, Saltsjö-Baden, Nacka, Sollentuna, Vaxholm or Vallentuna... oh no, wait a minute, those don't count as suburbs because there is no misery there. Oh, darn!

reply

Coming in a whole year and a half later... haha, are Danderyd and Nacka good neighbourhoods? In Let the Right One In, the author kinda doesn't make it seem so at all...

Fascinating debate the title translation caused though!

I just saw the trailer and theme song on youtube and the movie looks really interesting. I wish I could see it but I don't speak a word of Swedish lol
