It is based on the first book. The first book that Phyllis Reynolds Naylor wrote about Alice McKinley was titled The Agony of Alice. It was never intended to be a series but got such good reception that Naylor decided to continue with the character until her senior year and then finish with a book that takes her from age 18 to 60. Along the way, Naylor decided to write three prequels. So technically this isn't the youngest we ever know Alice, but it is based on the first ever book about her.

Does that help?

Thanks dana a 7. 9While watching this movie, I started to reminisce about these books. When I was in middle school I LOVED them. They were so realistic and relatable. The last book I read was when she was graduating from 8th grade.I had no idea that the books kept going. I am now 23 and seriously thinking about checking them out from the library. haha!

Me too! I didn't realize they followed her to age 60. Time for a library visit. Heh heh.
