Black Liz?

First off i am NOT racist but this is a character that you can't make black;; i don't care how politically correct it makes the film. I mean if that's what they're going for add an asian kid, a latino kid, and a few cripples too. Some films don't call for political correctness, or at least some characters don't. Elizabeth is supposed to be a stunningly beautiful typical suburban catholic girl with gorgeous dark long hair. She's prudish and not as bold as the other girls. That's part of her CHARACTER. AND further more Pamale's dad is racist--doesn't everybody remember when they brought their friend Gwen over? And how wierd her dad was;; because he is racist. So how can you make one of her best friends black?

I don't care how good of an actor she is, or how well she may be able to pull it off, it's not right. That's not her character.

[Again;; I'm not racist.]

i agree. i'm not racist either and im sure that the girl who plays elizabeth will do the part justice, but it's just not her character. sorry. (good point about pamel's dad)

What's your weirdest dream?
My sister was marrying a cupcake. So I married a cupcake, too!

reply

i agree completely and im not racist. It just wouldnt fit her character.

My sister is old fashioned-she still uses cds!

You're freaking out over absolutley nothing. Just because you add a black person doesnt make the entire thing a "politically correct" movie. That's just a stupid comment. And so what if Liz is supposed to be stunningly beautiufl and blah blah blah? The girl playing Liz is pretty. I think if the movie people were overly concerned with how the person looks rather than who can capture the personality of the person, we'd get some pretty bad actors in the movie. I can almost garuntee that she'd be better than a girl who "looked the part." And if they had cast a girl who looked like you think Liz should look, and she was terrible? Chances are people would be freaking out about that.

reply

Thank u. besides the person playing Liz is also PART WHITE!

reply

yeah like i read the books a few years ago and i was convinced that elizabeth is white...also its weird for me b/c the actors are all young...i guess its b/c the last book i read, they were much older already. and i find the casting in general kinda weird but who knows maybe it works.

reply

i agree that the casting is kind of weird....and marilyn's picture won't come up. that kinda made me mad. oh, well.

anyway, i am not racist. but i do agree. but i don't think they did it to be politically correct, i think they did it because she was a good actress. they just should ave found someone to look the part. it would be like having an african american play george bush in a movie. that may sound like a stretch but it isn't.

i think emma roberts should play elizabeth, but idk her hair may be too lite. if not, then jojo. they were good in aquamarine.

reply

Although everyone makes rather good points I'm sorry. Her father is RACIST. And that was a pretty big deal in one of the books. Don't you think it's kind of awkward being black and your dad being racist? I think it's wierd. That's all. I mean--I just don't think it fits in quiet right. I'm not denying that she has talent ok. I'm just saying that every single piece of her personality and home life just does not fit this actor. That's all. I mean it's just my opinion--she could work wonderfully but I just think it tampers with her character. anyways--that was all i was saying. The major thing that bothers me is just that her dad is racist.

I think Lester and Liz are complete miscasts.

Lester is ruggid, sarcastic with a mustache and a ladykiller. The acter they chose for him doesn't seem like eh can pull that off at all. But I guess we'll see.

And considering the factt that the issue of black people is very delicate and it's obvious Alice doesn't even know how to embrace an interracial couple in "ALice in the Know" She tries to hard to be fair, because she isn't used to it and notice how when they mention Tracy they say "woman of color." And when they first introduced Gwen they felt the need to point out she was black, while they didn't anyonee lse. Because it is assumed they are white, because that is the majority of their circle.

Im black, not that it matters. It just seems that she might not be able to pull off Liz, but we'll see.

reply

Regardless of her acting ability, it is essential to the story that she has long black hair. I always thought she was very fair. Alice always described her as a classic beauty and in our society that would not be the actor they chose. On the other hand they could have decided to go another route and not want to make any sequels. Movies are never potrayed as well as books. Books have more details that would make a movie waaaay too long. They may never make an Alice sequel so race may never become an issue. Or Phyllis Reynolds Naylor may have made that choice, like JK Rowling did with Harry Potters scar.

reply

I agree. I've read all the books several times. It's like having an African-American girl playing Hermione in Harry Potter. It's just not the character. They shouldn't make things up.

reply

that's the best analogy yet! I'm not racist and I think the actress must be good if they decided to take such a big leap in descritpion, but I HATE WHEN MOVIES CHANGE MY FAVORITE BOOKS and CHARACTERS! I grew up with the Alice series starting in the 5th grade and now I'm graduating highschool- that's 8 years with the fact that Liz was a gorgous white Christan girl. Idkn if I can bring myself to watch this movie. The boy playing Patrick also looks young....

reply

Again, not a racist. But, I must agree. I think appearance is very important in movies, just because there are so many good actors in this world, I believe there is really no reason for such a leap. I mean, they could have died Alyson's hair. So, if they did, cool. If not...errrrrrrr. I think Alyson is a decent actress, and shows potential. Plus, the dad being racist.. once again. It doesn't make sense.

I never ever imagined Lucas as Lester.. ever in a million years. I'm sorry. I mean, he has such a goody look, can you imagine him collecting beer cans and being scruffy looking? ahhaha.. I surely can't. I think the girl who was chosen to play Pamela looks perfect for the part, though. No complaints there on appearance! : )

Just a thought: If you are going to talk politically correct, then why not mention that in the books, Pamela's a blonde and that at that age, when Lester was in the Naked Nomads, Alice also had Rosalind and Sara as friends and Pamela and Elizabeth weren't her friends until about two or three years later?

reply

I agree with everything said. I love Alice books (actually, I'm reading "Alice on her Way" right now) and its kind of disappointing how they are going to completely change the appearance of a character. Also, the girl playing Alice has brown hair, while Alice has strawberry blond hair.

Oh well. I probably won't even see the movie anyways, so I guess it doesn't really matter to me.

reply

i agree with everything that's been said, and i am not racist either
but if they were going to change the character, at least something a little closer to how Elizabeth was described? an asian girl i think would've been closer and there would be less complaints
but maybe this is a coming out for the girl who is playing elizabeth. i've always remembered her as the little funny girl in my wife and kids; she needs a role like this to show the public she can be grown up and proper

reply

I've never read the books so I don't know what exactly all of you are talking about. Even if it doesn't matter to you all I do have to applaud you all for having the most civilized conversation on race that I've ever seen on these boards EVER.

On another note I do agree with what is said, if the girl in the books is really intended to be white and her father is racist it doesn't make much sense for the girl to be black. Even though I have heard of families were there is a minority child and a racist parent. Most of the time the parent that feels that way doesn't live with the child though.

Just my two cents

reply

No, an Asian would be just as bad .........

reply

Why are you freaking out? You aren't the one casting, you aren't in charge of the movie so you can't do anything about it. I suggest you just deal with it and go see the movie or not. Either way, you can't change the fact that the Liz in the movie is going to be black; get over it.

reply

ummm excuse me but it doesn't matter that liz is black. have you not seen other movies based on books where the writer has completly changed things. and addind a black person in a movie doesn't make it "politically correct". obivously the actress who is playing liz is good for the role or she wouldn't have gotten the part.
