is it really that bad?

i've seen the trailers several times, and it looks kinda cute (except for that annoying dork-laugh). and i think i'm a pretty harsh critic.

if the bulk of you recommend it, i'll add it to my netflix queue.

I finally watched it out of curiosity and the fact that I like Sandra Bullock and it was OK but I'm sure glad I didn't spend $10 at the theater to see it.

It's a harmless piece of fluff. If you're bored and can't think of anything else to watch - go for it.

reply

Its not terrible, but nothing is "good" aside from maybe the acting and it is hard to relate to and full of plot holes and improbabilities. I wouldn't waste your time with it, you'll just feel like you wasted time. There are millions of better films out there.

It was rubbish. Whoever came up with the idea of perennial bimbo Sandra Bullock playing an intellectual? Was that supposed to be an in-joke? Then for someone who is introverted and social insecure, she has a odd level of promiscuity and lack of inhibition when a man shows the slightest interest in her. These are only the two most obvious problems which immediately come to my mind. The producers cannot live in the real world, they have such little understanding of it. Or comedy.

It's not that unusual

I've dated a few high IQ girls; the hard part is getting them to agree to go on the date; but once they do a lot of them are so amazingly grateful to be getting attention from a cute guy they jump all over you and straight into bed

Maybe it's an experience you only have if you are good looking, but I've had more than a few girls who acted like her. My current relationship started in a very similar way

It's just been my experience that the girls who go straight into sex on the first date are usually either really-really smart or really-really stupid, mostly because both extremes of intelligence tend to be socially awkward and fall easily for a good looking guy.

It's the girls of average intelligence but normal levels of social interaction who follow the normal rules of dating and hold back for at least a few dates (or longer if they are religious)

I watched it and I must say I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would. The movie, like Mary-grows on people. Give it a shot-it's not a bad movie.

reply

It's on HBO and I flipped it on after months of passing it up. I only caught half of it but I enjoyed it. Is it one of my favs? Not even close. But, it's a good movie just to pass the time. I'm glad to see Sandra Bullock taking more risks in her work. IMO, Thomas Hayden Church stole the movie. Having been in broadcasting for years, I know firsthand how egocentric broadcasters can be and his antics made me LOL.

It was a pretty nice movie to watch, I would recommend it if you got nothing else, But of all the romantic comedies off late, this was worth the watch and I did laugh out loud more than a few times. BTW, 8 of us watched this movie (5 guys + 3 Girls) and we all liked it. No idea what the big fuss is 'bout!!!
Cheers

It's okay, it really isn't nearly as bad as everyone makes it out to be. It doesn't really know what it wants to be though. I thought Sandra did a surprisingly good job and her character was likable so I have no idea why she won a Razzie. If anything she was one of the highlights of the movie.

I too thought it was okay, and I'm sure they (The Razzie people) just gave it to her because she was the big item at the time. The entire award ceremony (if yoiu even want to call it that) is jank, and they just try and down whatever is popular (Heather winning worst actress for "The Blair Witch Project" I don't think so).

But about the movie, I mean I'll say towards the end it gets a little ludacris (with the torando), and I mean sure some of Sandra Bullock's performance kind of wasn't as well as it could have been. But I mean it's a cute movie, and if anything a mindless way to kill some time. Besides I even laughed out loud a few times; because her character Mary is so darn likable.

I'm not laughing at you, I'm laughing with you.

and watched it last night. i was pleasantly surprised. it's not my fave sandra bullock movie, but it was certainly worth 2 hours (or whatever) of my life. she didn't deserve the razzie.

reply

She got the Razzie because she took the risk of playing an awkward character in a movie that was essentially (and mistakenly) billed as a comedy, and the movie was universally panned by critics. It was Hollywood's way of telling her- "You dropped the ball, sister!". It was time to pick on someone respected by the community and it was her turn. It was not because of her performance per se.

reply

Or, maybe it totally was because of her performance.

I haven't seen the movie but I'm pretty sure the reason why so many of you say this film isn't that bad is because your expections were mega low in the first place.

reply

Yes, it's really that bad.

reply

Wot-!? This film was really bad! I couldn't finish watching it. There's nothing good about this film except for Sandy. Watch Speed or White man's guilt instead.

reply

It really is that terrible yes.
