(SPOILER) Physical question about rescue

Maybe I just wasn't watching closely. I just didn't see what it was the people trapped in the bottom of the mine shaft discovered that enabled them to effect their own rescue They said, in effect, AHA! And sudenly they were being pulled out. They mentioned the old mine car, but how did that help them?

Also if the newscaster who jumped into the mine had been wearing a wireless microphone, that might have provided some possibility for one-way communication FROM the bottom of the shaft. But the film did not exploit that possibility.

They couldn't do anything from the surface anyway. The ground was too unstable.
They attached some kind of wire to the cart and attached the crane's wire to themselves so that when the cart went down the shaft, the wire pulled them up because it was the same wire attached to the cart. The cart was heavy, they were lighter, movie physics.
