Was this a rip off of Saw?

Saw it at the Cinequest 2007 Film Festival tonight. I liked it but when I watched it, I couldn't stop thinking of the theme from "Saw".

Hey i was there for all three screenings of that MINDBENDERS showing whihc had the shorts + Criticized. This is my take on it: I dont think this was ever like a SAW movie. I mean i see where you're coming from with the whole "killer stalking someone to make them more appreciative of something" but this dude, Arthur, was just plain crazy for his movie. Jigsaw wants to make people appreciate their lives. This was much, much better than any of the saw movies. the Saw movies just try to gross the audience out, this was a masterpiece that tried to gross us out, but in a positive way, ill explain. Saw just wants to throw blood at everything and make us squirm so we are sick. Criticized wanted to make us squirm and feel the pain that the victim who got the clip to the eye felt. we sympathize with how defenseless and vulnerable he is. I got to interview the actor who played Arthur, the crazy guy, and he said when making the movie, he and the director WERE HOPING for that kind of reaction. they like it when they see people leaving the theater with their hand over their face laughing. thats what they were aiming for. Saw just makes you wanna hurl. anyway hope you enjoy reading this. let me know if you agree/disagree with anything i said or if anything i said didnt make sense. talk to ya later. :)

I did not think that this was a ripoff of Saw. That film series has some very creative, and downright gruesome, devices with gory outcomes. This involves a less creative device (a paperclip) whose use had an outcome that makes you squirm, but is nowhere as gory as Saw is. Not only that, the methods and motives of the antagonists are not the same either.

Why does everyone who watches something and they think it's similar to something else think it's a rip-off? Not everything is a rip-off of something else. It's called inspiration. It's like saying "The Hills Have Eyes" is a rip-off of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (Or any movie about cannibals), but without a chainsaw and a guy that wears peoples skin. You want a rip-off? Watch a movie from "The Asylum". They're the real people that have rip-offs.

"Rip off of Saw"?

I haven't seen Saw, but isn't the plot about some whacked-up puppet who kidnaps people and makes them participate in dangerous activities?

This short is about a critic who is abducted and tortured by the director who's movie he panned.

I don't understand how you could come to that conclusion. Maybe the environment was similar to that of Saw's or something?

But no, it's not a rip-off.
