Gave it an 8 but one thing nearly knocked it down to 7 (*spoiler*)

The screaming madman Karl killing Frank really bothered me. Is it just me or did this seem not earned at all? I mean sure you see him acting incredibly odd and "crazy" when they find him next to Victoria's body and they seemed to have a certain disdain for one another in general but that still seems like a bit of a jump to me (no pun intended).

Can anyone shed some light on how he realistically could have turned from a normal, if somewhat douchey guy into a psycho killer?

I like the movie but when this happened I literally thought "now it's a 7" after feeling an 8 for majority of the runtime but as it turned out, the ending redeemed it back to an 8.

If you gave an 8 to this you would give a 7 to watching paint dry.

I didn't really like that they made that decision, either, but I think Carl was panicking and desperate. Carl left them behind. He was gibbering that he would have come back for them, but he was clearly lying. He was trying to save himself. I think Carl assumed that they would leave him behind, too. Which is not an unfair assumption since they left him in the dark. He didn't realise the dad was (begrudgingly) going back to get Carl and help him.

So, Carl snapped and tried to kill them both and take their oxygen so he could escape himself.
