Just saw the first fifteen minutes...

Just... wow.

A step up from Taeguki and even parallel with Saving Private Ryan... any history/military fan should see this movie.

Honestly, Saving Private Ryan isn't that much better than Taeguki either, it's just really really really gory. The other elements of the movie are rather mundane and generic, while Assembly talks about one of the most important elements of war that's hardly discussed: the veterans and their levels of recognition.

The only reason I wouldn't place Assembly over Saving Private Ryan but rather on an equal scale is due to the pacing. Assembly starts out with a punch as an action movie, but halfway through mellows out and becomes a drama. While I understand it's hard to conceive of a script that satisfies both genres in this case, while watching Assembly near the end I was just struck with a pang of longing... for more action. Perhaps it's the generic Hollywood style that has affected me, since almost every action movie plays like this: intro, rising action, climax, falling action. The big finale is always towards the end. My friends who watched it with me also had this minor complaint.

Nevertheless, I really enjoyed the emotional aspect of the film. Subtle touches, such as washing of the old helmets and their placement on unknown soldiers' graves, was to say least a tribute to veterans in all theaters of war.

I finished the movie btw :)

the intro action sequence was soo good?
everything after that was not as amazing :(
i agree that it turns into a drama afterwards because i was expecting a grueling war epic ...
*sigh*

Well, I think one can safely say that you missed the point of the movie, yuan-yao.

Yeah, I was a bit bored and disappointed at first by this film's odd structure, but then I realized that this is more realistic. In life, your greatest moment isn't always toward the end of your life (unless you die during/right after that great moment), and that's exactly what this movie did.

reply

I didn't realize this point until I read your post! And you're absolutely correct. This film put a human side of war vets.

reply

I'd say the action was a step up even from Saving Private Ryan. There was alot more of intense little details going on throughout the battles. But Saving Private Ryan was much more epic in proportion.

The beginning was crazy when you see that foolishly brave political officer just get turned into a flying piece of red meat by the anti-tank weapon. Wow!

I kinda didn't like how after the Korean war scene the movie turned into a complete drama. It was kinda boring from all that excitement leading up to that point and also it was depressing to see the hardcore Captain all of a sudden turned into this old guy everyone thinks is just crazy.

reply

is their a climatic battle

reply

the drama was the entire point of the movie. the action at the start was just a way for the director to give the audience a reason why guzidi went to such efforts into finding his company. Fengxiaogang coulda made the movie without the battle as well, focusing and elaborating more on the drama, but then i don't think people'd like it that much

reply

However, it does lead to a problem in balance. At the least, the drama needs to rise to a decent climax to complement the roaring start the movie gets off to. Paths of Glory suffered a little in that respect too.

Nonsense.

Utter nonsense.

that comment pretty much hit the point of the movie spot on. makes you think about all the 'crazy' vets you've met

I think the point is that everyone who has experienced war, his brothers in arms become more than family. towards the end of the movie he is trying to get his brothers be recognized and respected for what they did. The intense action in the beginning of the movie is what makes him tick at the end of the movie. It made the bond between them and the determination to find them.
I think it's a great movie about a human who has losed more than his comerades.By finding the graves of his comrades he will find back his own identity. He never gave up the bond between them.
If you can let go the Hollywood way of telling a story, you will experience a great movie.

Saving Private Ryan is one of the best War Films i've seen but this is up there with it - I also loved the Korean film Brotherhood - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0386064/

altho this is a good film, private ryan and brotherhood are better

I thought this film was great. Saving Private Ryan is one of my favourite films ever. This is not better than SPR but it is close.

After the first half an hour I was beginning to think it was going to be just bangs and whistles (although very good bangs and whistles). But the film changes direction halfway through and becomes much more engrossing.

As well as the stunning visuals, the story and performances are excellent.

Personally I dont mind subtitles but it is obviously easier to watch a visually stunning film if you dont have to read them. The one weak point I did find is that some of the dialogue seemed a bit strange but this was probably just down to translation. I certainly wouldnt advise anyone not to watch it because of the subtitles though.

It is refreshing to see this kind of film being made but disappointing for the west that we are continually now having to turn to asian film to get this kind of quality.

reply

hm ye... i think its more of the translation, although the main guy does use heaps of slang which makes it harder to translate/

Out of all my faovurite i sstil like Brotherhood of war, its emotional + realism really touched me. Then SPR then Assembly, i think why Assembly is slightly weaker form the other too, is tht it isnt "as" emotional (to me) as Brotherhood porbaly becuase of the brilliant music in brotherhood that made me be touche dby it, and it wasnt "as" intense as the aciton in SPR., I hope more of these movies could come in the future!

reply

I reckon "Brotherhood" is abit Average. Not that much emotional attachement for me on the characters.

And it's even more disappointing that films such as this don't get much, if any, exposure in the West

. . . any history/military fan should see this movie.
What, you advise this after having only seen the first 15 minutes of this film?

However, as it happens, it is a v. good film.

reply

Well it's a good movie. But I feel it's a little too much Westernized or Americanized. The director must see Saving Ryan many times.

We are all globe villagers.

reply

lol I thought it was a copy of band of brothers except less realistic, with headshots after headshots after headshots. If you liked this you should definitely see Stalingrad. Stalingrad, Das Boot, and Band of Brothers are my favorites.

reply

It was a good movie, but rather slow paced in some parts. After the film finished I was amazed to see it had run for 1 hour 56 minutes. It felt more like 2 and a half hours. The story was very good, and in some parts I enjoyed the drama more than the action scenes. It is a very tragic story, but it was nice to see that Gu's brothers were recognised as heroes in the end.

reply

i just finished watching it.. and believing it is on the level of taegukgi.. it was quite good.. the 1st 15 minutes i was really amazed. very impressive.. i just thought everything were on FULL WAR.. but after three forths of the movie. the scene became dramatic.. i was quite upset... and made me bored.. but after the finishing the movie.. i realize what the director really implies about and what the movie is all about.. and i really enjoy the film.. nice work from RED ARMY!.. i always see a war movie where the RED are ALWAYS THE VILLAIN.. BUT in this movie.. ITS THE RED ARMY's DRAMATIC MOVIE... NICE MOVIE..

reply

Red Army? You're joking right? My brother you are very misinformed.

No, you're not ignorant and stupid. You just have selective amnesia and wear a douche bag as a hat.

reply

agree that this was a great movie and enjoyed the drama but cant agree with saving private ryan as best of the three movies mentioned here.
