How does this end? Please spoil it for me

Roger Ebert made it sound like the stupidest thing ever. What happens?

Anton Chigurh is dead and Spider-Man 3 is superior in every way to Funny Games.

reply

I think it's apparent from his review that everyone dies horribly and the killer gets away scot free. Ebert is always merciless towards horror movies where that happens, and who can blame him?

reply

Well (SPOILERS) The Descent and Chinatown have similar endings and neither of those sound as bad as this one. It's all about the circumstances.

Anyway, this really does sound like a huge piece and I won't see it. It's a waste of my time.

Everybody dies, except the girl (main character).
She gets shipped of to Asia inside a box.

Pretty good movie actually, 7/10

You should watch Funny Games. I think the movie was literally made for you ;)

The kidnapper/killer also survives (and on to nab more girls)...the worst part of all is that there were hints that after all of this murder and mayhem, he's a "killer with a heart" [vomit] because he leaves the girl (in the box she was shipped in) her motion sickness meds, food, a book and a flashlight...and, oh yes, a kitty litter box (but no toilet paper LOL). Awwww...how sweet! And the cherry on top was the picture of all the other abducted girls (what was that, a way to say "I'm nice but not THAT nice"???

I assumed the motion sickness meds were included so that her captors didn't open the box up to find her covered in her own vomit.

After many failed attempts to escape - Mel, Jules, and the driver are still alive by the end. He drives them to a warehouse and asks if either of them have any tattooes. Jules has one on her butt, and so he takes her into a room and removes it. The girls are kept in a bathroom, where the driver forces Mel to dye her hair blonde. The girls are then forced to undress to their underwear and display themselves to a man. Satisfied, the man leaves and the girls are put back in the bathroom. Mel realizes that throughout the night, the driver never intended to hurt them (since neither have a scratch on them).

The driver, after going through their belongings, finds medication in one of the bags. He asks them who it belongs to and what it's for. It belongs to Jules, and is used to treat her yeast infection. He takes Jules back to the shuttle and suffocates her by tying her to a seat while he fills the bus with exhaust.

Mel breaks the mirror in the bathroom and threatens to cut her own face with a shard of glass. The driver says that if she cuts herself, he'll kill her. Nonetheless, he unloads his gun and throws it in the toilet. Mel tries to escape, but the driver fights with her. She stabs him in the leg with the glass and retrieves the gun from the toilet. She loads it and shoots him in the face. She then takes his keys and starts up the shuttle. The driver is still alive and continues to fight with her. He ends up grabbing her and throwing her into a crate, which he seals and puts air holes in.

Sometime the next morning, the crate is brought to a ship and placed in a large container (we see that there are several other containers as well). Inside the crate is a flashlight with batteries, water, a litter box, some food, Mel's motion sickness medicine, e.t.c... Mel finds a photograph of a bunch of nude girls. It turns out that the driver works for the sex slave industry. He didn't hurt the girls because they're worthless all cut up. We see that the ship is on its way to east Asia. The end.

_____________

She has to be alive by the time she arrives in Asia. Now going to Asia by boat takes along time so naturally she would need food and water otherwise he would get in trouble if she arrived dead or dying. Also she gets motion sickness so if he didn't give her her pills something she would have been throwing up(I don't know what happens beyond that if you have major motion sickness) and it would be his ass who was in trouble.

I don't know what peoples' problems with this ending are. You people have watched too many Disney movies. Life isn't always (and maybe rarely is) happily ever after.

I think the ending was perfect for this really crappy movie. All through the movie, the bad guy kept saying that he'd kill them if they tried anything. And all throughout the movie, they tried things and were not killed.

If she had gotten away, it would have made it seem as if in a hostage situation, trying to be the hero or disobeying your kidnapper is the way to go. I hate how badguys are always made to be weak, and how they always end up losing in the end. Like James Bond movies. You already know how it's going to end (bad guy loses).

It's refreshing to see the movie end like this.

reply

everyone missed one thing.

In the end, one bag of one of the girls is seen at the baggage claim conveyor belt. Throughout the movie, the bad guy tries to destroy all identity of the girls (cards, photos, and even tattoo) so that no one can identify them and no one knows that they are missing. But, I hope, the bag in the end is shown to prove that their identities are not lost and with an unclaimed bag cops will know that the girls are missing.

reply

Good point!

"..What this country really needs, right now, is a Doctor."

reply

Seriously? You don't think the cops will know they are missing when they don't show up at home after their trip? Ex-fiance? Family? Friends?

It's not like they couldn't find out from the airline manifest if they actually made it back to the states. She even filled out a lost baggage claim. I don't understand your point whatsoever.

The reason (I believe) they show the baggage at the end is because it finally got unloaded from a new flight that came in? Because it was basically the delay and loss of the bag that got them stranded alone in the first place.

reply

ALSO: What would the police do? They find the luggage, walk all around town, find a lot of dead bodies, don't know who did it (because it's not CSI) and that's it. If you're in a crate inside a shipping container on a freighter to China or wherever nobody will ever find you and bring you back. And when you get there it's even less likely to be found.

If the suitcase means anything, I think it's that there are always new girls coming to walk into that guys trap.

reply

I seriously hated this ending.. Probably because I am a girl and I'm so sick and tired of seeing women used as chum in movies.

Really, the only way to fix this is for there to be a sequel. Shuttle 2: Shanghai surprise! Basically, Mel arrives in China, then escapes along with several other abducted blonde American women. Then, they plot revenge on the white slavers, go on a massive shooting spree and kill up a lot of women-hating *beep* That's a good ending.

reply

I understand how this might be upsetting for women, but I think that especially in the horror genre this ending is sort of an exception. Because most of the time the women are the only survivors. And while this might not be true for other genres, I would say it's not that big of a deal, because in recent horror movies women are almost always the stronger sex.

reply

I liked the ending, i may have been 'depressing' but it made a great change from the idiotic woman escaping the killer despite 1000 bad decisions just because she's the nice girl\brunette\virgin.
