Why is a non-singer like Ciara cast in the lead role?

Obviously they thought she was fit for the part. Plus, it sure won't hurt ticket sales to cast Ciara as the lead.

You are all wrong. The movie is an modern adaptation of the play. In the play the lead character was a 13 year old gospel singer who wanted to sing secular music. In the movie adapatation the lead charactar played by Ciara is a 24 year old r&b star singing todays popular music and her mother is a television evangelest. Ciara is not singing gospel in the movie. The movie is not a musical. It is a contemporary drama about a mother and duaghter relationship. There are musical performances in the movie, but it is not a musical. Ciara does a great acting job in the movie.

It's truly a shame that they changed the whole story around so they could cast that whisperer in the lead role.
