Balls to this, bring back Firefly!

I love firefly... and Serenity!

reply

Balls to Firefly, bring back Farscape!

reply

Frell, you just opened some serious wounds oh the Farscape Memories...

God that show was just getting stronger and stronger

reply

Farscape was both incredibly dire and cheap, and quite cool.. at the same time. but you can't compare any sci-fi show to firefly, it hands down owns them all.

i liked farscape, it just felt they went over the top with everything they did, i did enjoy the show, hell i bought every episode and the film on dvd, but it was ridiculously stupid sometimes.

firefly was perfect, i bet fox regrets ripping it from the air, cuz ever since they did it's been voted the best sci fi tv show ever made to be cancelled.

reply

From the moment the captain kicked that dude through the ship engine...*sigh*

Firefly was absolutely flawless.

reply

ah yes truly a great moment! Long live Firefly!!

reply

Firefly sucked big time. Dark Angel was great, it's the show they should have a movie on, not Firefly..

reply

I rather enjoyed both firefly and Dark angel

reply

OK, if Dark Angel was better than Firefly, why didn't the fans rally round that to get a movie made??? Serenity came about because of fan pressure, and to be fair, that movie is so good it almost numbs the pain of the shows loss! BTW, what the hell have Dark Angel & Firefly got to do with BW? This cancellation sucks!

reply

James Cameron sold his rights of Dark Angel to FOX, he tried to get them back but failed. Who knows what he would have done if he would have gotten them back.

reply

I personally thought that Dark angel being canceled the way it was was almost more painful because there was no closure at all at least we got serenity with firefly. In Dark Angel it was painfully obvious that they did not know the end was coming thus we got a major unresolved cliffhanger.

reply

i don't think there'll ever be a better show than firefly

ever

reply

Serenity never made back what it cost to make it so much for the 'fans". Dark Angel fans are still scraeming for their chance but FOX in the wake of Dark Angel managing to be the highest selling sci fi series against both Firefly and Stargate Atlantis...

And the loser who dissed Farscape should be shot... classic... sci fi with style, individuality... if anything Firely takes elements from other sci fi shows.

I'm not saying your show sucked... but at least DA would make back what it took to make it...

reply

Serenity more than made up its budget because of its fantastic DVD run. Let's be real, Firefly was one of the most unique and fun shows I've ever seen; it really is a shame it ended so soon.

Dark Angel? If they made a film it would gross about $13...

"If the tail were smarter than the dog, the tail would wag the dog"

reply

Uh its official fact- the cost of Serenity- taking to account salaries/ price of movie/ e.c.t. is how you price how much a movie took to make- they did not make back the amount of money it took for 'SERENITY'. This is documented, published and released fact. Sorry to burst your denial...

Dark Angel, forget for a moment that it is regarded even by critics as a cult hit,l forget that it has a huge fanbase that still fights hard and strong, that it was created, the name attached is James Cameron a science fiction god writer. And by god I mean he is a sci fi god... all these amazing things would ensure more than ample return, and remarketing the DVD collection... more money there...

Jessica Alba. Michael Weatherly. Jensen Ackles. These three would draw in the audience who doesn't have aclue about Dark Angel the audience that doesn't realize without Dark Angel these stars would not be where they are now... any conclusion would rake it in.

Firefly was a bitter sad dissapointment, let's be honest here...Firefly DVDs continue to be marked down...as with Serenity in a vein attempt to sell... Dark Angel barring specials- a half season collection less episodes is more expensive because more people want it...why wouldn't they, who would trade the struggle for one's identity, searching for awnsers, family- trying to belong, emotional connection even with the villians to the western set, bad music.... not to mention characters you get lost in , not beleive in.

Let's be more blunt. With Dark Angel its the whole FOX has an ego, they'd have to admit they were wrong and somehow they aren't the type to do that. And FOX owns the right to produce it and they are not giving it up.

So you sit there with your self righteous attidude about your fourteen epsiodes, Joss Whedon's name getting a movie that couldn't hack it... and realize that Dark Angel was a victim of the post 9/11 world where anything showing the provactive concepts like it did... and Firefly was a ' almost' show...

And F.Y.I if 9/11 had never happened, we wouldn't be having ( with all reverance and compassion to the victims) this conversation, Firefly wouldn't have been made at least not when it did...I am so sick of listening to Firefly fans runninga round the boards of every science fiction show saying how great your show is- it was always second best... at least we D.A and really every other shos fans dont have to live with the knowledge , your show was jsut a a sci fi replacement... with no real attachments... and why it never stood a chance with FOX.

And its why I now hate Joss Whedon despite loving Buffy and Angel. He was so self absorbed and willing to live with why his show was getting on the air as an obvious to idiots second choice... anyone knew Dark Angel was made, had enough for a third season, but the time he approached them... exactly when he knew there would be one slot...knew they were looking for a way to justify axing a cult hit science fiction...just to launch his 'Firefly'.

Hey... don't get mad its the truth. Even though I dont like the new Battlestar Galactica I like it more than Firefly, in fact nearly any science fiction show is better than Firefly... you want to troll our shows do it on your board.. if you you can't take someone tearing you apart for crawling on other boards (Bionic Women which was wicked... in case you didn't realize, I loved Jaime's relationship with Becca.. sisterhood!) and insult shows saying 'Firefly rules, balls, not as good, ' or whatever half wit expression you are using today...goiung around rating all our shows one star in a collective group...and whatever else immaturity reigns inside you all... I'll stop insulting Firefly when you all grow up and stop trashing other shows to make yourselves feel better... I'm sick of reading it whenever I look at science fiction message boards... and I'm sure people agree with me...

Quick note, the Dollhouse (Joss Whedon)... has a character called Sierra- firefly has one called Inara Serra, Whedon can't come up with new different names?

Wow.
That's a lot of talking...
... but not much sense.

You claim to have "documented, published and released fact" about Serenity's profits but fail to provide any links to this information so allow me to enlighten you.
cdr717 was correct in stating that the movie more than made back its costs in the DVD sales. I fail to see where his/her "self righteous" attitude is.
These are the facts.
The movie reportedly cost $39 million to make (and this does include the salaries and "price of movie" and the "e.c.t."..... whatever that is).
The worldwide box office profit alone was $38,849,097.
This means that it barely missed breaking even in the theaters.
All movies today rely on DVD sales for the bulk of their profits and the average statistic is that the domestic box office sales make 14% of the total profit, but as you pointed out Firefly and Joss Whedon have a special type of diehard fanbase so I wouldn't be surprised to hear of the studio making back more than 5 times their investment because of the DVDs.

In your comment you seem to blame the cancellation of DA on 9/11 as well as Joss Whedon and his new show Firefly.
This is a little sad.
As you correctly stated Dark Angel was a cult show, which means it had no real mainstream success and a low profit margin. That's what a cult show is, so the use of the words "cult hit" is an oxymoron.
Many "cult hit" sci-fi shows get canceled because they are always in the firing line (especially at FOX). To blame another show for DA's demise is unwarranted.
Also, to attribute its cancellation to 9/11 is a bit of a weak argument. If the events of September 11th 2001 was to have any adverse effect on the show then James Cameron and his fellow writers had ample opportunity to adapt their formula to something more post 9/11 acceptable. They had an entire second season.
If the creators didn't see any problems then then why are you choosing to see them now?

you want to troll our shows do it on your board
This isn't the Dark Angel board it's the Bionic Woman board and I personally come here because I liked the Bionic Woman, but it's inevitable that a canceled sci-fi show will be compared to other, often more popular, sci-fi shows that have also been canceled.
If I open and read a thread entitled "Balls to this, bring back Firefly!" then I have a reasonable expectation that this thread will be about Firefly and how the OP feels it's superior. I wouldn't call that trolling. Posting in a pro-Firefly thread about how you dislike it and hate Whedon would be more in line with Troll behavior but I choose to believe you're not trolling.

I do agree that Cameron is a legendary sci-fi writer but I didn't like DA or Titanic so it's been 14 years since he's done something good IMO (I loved True Lies).
I look forward to Avatar and his new 3D camera system. It should be a good one. Then he's doing Battle Angel. Sooo exciting.

He worked with Eliza Dushku on True Lies so if she still has his number maybe she and Joss should call him and ask (beg/threaten at gunpoint) if he'll write a few episodes for Dollhouse. That would be very interesting and maybe bring the Dark Angel/Firefly fans together in harmony.

Quick note response. Sierra is a name taken from the Phonetic Alphabet just like Echo (Dushku) and Victor (Some guy I don't know who has ears that stick way out).
The Phonetic Alphabet predates Firefly so I'd assume that Sierra's naming was not inspired by Inara Serra.

Quick note before my rant- Bionic Woman's run went eight aired episodes...sad isn't it...

Writing this when I was tired , yes. But I was more pissed off on the person who said Dark Angel would only gross 13 dollars... because we do have trolls on the Dark Angel board and many others who act, and write like that- it's annoying yes- so I decided to write a complete rant...because I was furious at listening to it... and ranty I was and I know that isn't a word. Because a Pro Firefly thread to start belongs in Firefly board, its offensive for it to be here...I genrally don't rant about Dark Angel on other show's boards... if a thread like this started it should be genralized as in all other sci fi, not just about how one show is better than them all.

Genrally though, if they could have axed Dark Angel after season one they would have, contracts had been signed, it was too costy, so they did the next best thing, bad time slots... it's a well known fact that any sci fi can be killed no matter how good with a single move- just look at Firefly shown out of order then axed.

At least even though I don't like Firefly, I willl admit FOX didn't give it a chance. I guess my frustration goes to Whedon a lot- if he had waited or gone to another network he would have stood a far greater chance with his series. I am not blaming Firefly exactly... I'm blaming timing and it is well known about how Dark Angel become the show FOX didn't want but the evil people have refused to give up the rights to this day... like Sci Fi with Stargate SG1.

Intresting idea, but I think James Cameron even if he just came on board for an episode- they just wouldn't get along. I agree, there is a huge gulf between fans but just because you didn't like Dark Angel doesn't mean its been 14 years since JC did anything good- I hate Lost but apprently people like it...

Most of all, I hate the FOX network...the sadistic slimy idiots they are and we should all join in on the hating...

I liked True Lies too, watched it four times.

Are you gonna reply to Randomdisorder's post RE the money that Serenity made? It seems like you just ignored it. If youve got official documented facts that Serenity didnt make its money back after dvd release, then please provide it. Im interested.

Box office performance-
''''''Despite critical acclaim and Internet buzz, Serenity performed poorly at the box office. Although several pundits predicted a #1 opening,[69][70][71] the film opened at #2 in the United States, taking in $10.1 million its first weekend, spending two weeks in the top ten, and totaling a box office gross of $25.5 million.[2] Movie industry analyst Brandon Gray described Serenity's box office performance as "like a below average genre picture".[72]

Serenity's international box office results were mixed, with strong openings in the UK, Portugal and Russia, but poor results in Spain, Australia, France and Italy. Universal International Pictures canceled the film's theatrical release in at least seven countries, planning to release it directly to DVD instead. The box office income outside the United States was $13.3 million, with a worldwide total of $38.8 million,[73] slightly less than the film's $39 million budget, which does not include the promotion and advertising costs."""""

Justifying that DVDs earned back what it took to make it, isn't an argument for the fact it made back...but your film was released in the Box office... like actually to cinema, ( which maybe for the X Files, and even should have been Stargate is justified) It's also semantacs... I'm sure that even the tv show 'Joey' ( widely known as a bad idea, on all bad ideas) would have eventually made back what it took to make in DVDs. And I'm sure bad movie flops have as well through DVDs. Thats why DVDs are realeased.. mostly ( still cranky because I have to get the Pretender in series in region one)

I don't know about other people but I buy DVDS series I haven't watched before and watch them ( because I hate watching normal tv) that's how I got the the series 'Surface' and only watched two episode....

Do you know how many millions would have been spent in advertising... and dvd production... this film is no X Files, no Star Trek... I was actually shocked when I found out in went to theatrical release.

Actually still shocked... since the Ark of Truth a film from a sci fi that ran 'ten' years and 211 episodes didn't get that... so yeah I think its stupid and genrally pick on the fact that Serenity didn't make back in its theatrical release ( which in the eys of the networks is all imoportant) where as other movies such as 'Ark of Truth would have.

Because it should have been a straight to DVD release...and even you Firefly nuts have to admit that one...

Note on Bionic Woman, anyone else really get annoyed by the C.IA boyfriend of Jaime's I mean , couldn't they have established her first and come up with a different type of boyfriend....?

( I bought the dvd for bionic woman too)
Oh yes not on Bionic Woman, anyone else notice that

I have a 9 year old Yahoo mail account created at the end of Dark Angel. It was a good show i thoroughly enjoyed it. I actually purchased a Ninja motorcycle because of the one i saw on Dark Angel.

It was starting to lack in season 2 though it just wasnt as good as season 1. But back to the point, Bionic Woman couldnt cut the mustard. Its shiny and shallow and from the first episode anyone who has watched any tv in their life knew it wouldnt last.

Point is that "tv experts" i.e people in charge get this on the air and cancel shows like Firefly and Dark Angel. Thats the tragedy the criminal lack of sense/management/scheduling that ruined these character driven shows with some god damn soul.

"Once someone tried to tell Jack Bauer a knock knock joke, he found out who it was where they worked and where the goddamn bomb was!"

reply

Bionic Woman was destroyed by constant network medling. No producer was really running that show. Michelle Ryan was unfairly blamed for its failure.

reply

You're wrong, there already is a show far better than Firefly was it's called "Battlestar Galactica".

sorry for interrupting.... fan of all these shows... but um...

isn't this a message board for Bionic Woman?

I swear every board i go to there's some die-hard save the whatever show fan.

firefly, dark angel, farscape all awesome

hey why don't we save stargate sg-1, roar, buffy, angel, omg...

you know what we should really bring back? quantum leap.

every show gets cancelled eventually, Bionic Woman may be able to be resurrected but all the other shows? the actors couldn't even if they wanted to most of them are contracted to something else at the moment.

sorry to rain on your parades. but get over it.

You made love to me because the game told you to?
No I f'd you because the game told me to

reply

You're right, this is the Bionic Woman board.

Do you have anything to say concerning Bionic Woman?

No?

Maybe that's because the show is gone, dead, kaput, canceled. The only thing that's left to do is lament (or in the case of many who visit this board, celebrate) the demise of yet another sci-fi show.

This naturally leads to many people reminiscing about the many shows that have come before. And since Firefly, Dark Angel and Farscape all lasted more than 9 episodes and had a larger following, it follows that these shows will be talked about (in the absence of any BW news).

Don't worry about raining on anybodies parade, because you're not.

Parades are happy celebrations.

This would be more like a funeral march. It doesn't matter what the weather is like during one of those.

PS. Quantum Leap sucked. If I was to resurrect a show (one with cast members who're available) then I'd go back to 1996 and uncancel Space: Above and Beyond.

I hear FOX is under new management these days. Maybe I should write a letter.

reply

Exactly.

Everything you just said, is what I would have said. Cept the Quantum Leap thing.

Bionic woman got cancelled, so did firefly. Thats a valid topic to bring up in a cancelled sci fi show board. If someone started saying "George Bush sucks and who are you going to vote for for the next american president?" Then Id see your point. But what are you gonna do, talk about the 8 episodes of bionic woman they made over and over again? Youre gonna run out of things to say.

Spike simply did a spell and made it able for Drusilla to pass out. - MikeStvns

reply

One has to wonder what FOX does when they recieve (them and other networks) our letters and petetions, campains... I think they laugh- and I guess eight episodes... must be making you Firefly nuts count your blessings huh- it could have been worse...

Still that's why I hate most of the big networks... they cancel all the shows I love. And not to bring more out of topic, but Heroes after last seasons chopped in half before it could reach it's climax... has put it in real jeapordy... a third season could be it's last. And that's tragic... but then a long time ago a network axed a show called 'Star Trek'.

That when we sci fi fans have to realze the horrible, predjuced truth... outr shows never get the same chances, same budgets as other shows...and are the first on the firing line.

in 2000 I had many shows to watch now it's down to the current shows- Supernatural, Heroes , NCIS ( A sixth seaosn is not a definate yet), Scrubs ( Eight will be the last) and ER( About to embark its final season shift)

reply

I would further add to something you mentioned in there about budgets. I truly feel that sci-fi audiences dont really care about the budget of a show its really been about getting the story and characters.

I would say we look past the money aspect more readily then fans of other genres. Flashy effects are preety but a solid idea is everything.

reply

me neither. when the networks use them as an exxcuse tro use that axe of theirs I do...

reply

Episode 16 "The Angriest Angel". The part towards the end when he gets the troopers to reflect on their death then they turn to him to hear his speech and he says something along the lines of "Hell i'm not going die. Im too good for that but i thought the rest of you should have a think"

Brilliant show.

reply

THAT was the moment that sold me on Firefly. I knew this crew and this captain weren't going to be the standard cookie cutter characters I'd seen hundreds of times before. They'd act like people, not perfect TV characters.
