Whole Audience still sitting during the Credits

i watched this film yesterday in a Theater in Frankfurt, and i was amazed that though the credits rolled down, no one made a move to stand up as one usually do.

Everyone was sitting and hoping for the story to go on, or atleast the father to show up. Or just watch the see moving.

It truly was a amazing scene. Has this also happened to you in any film ?

Spoilerwarnung!

Genau so!

That's exactly the same reaction of the crowd as i was a month ago in the movie theatre. And its great in the germany most of the movie theatres don't wait for the ending credits they just lighten up the room but fatihs good trick to keep everyone sitting and reading all the credits. and if think it is...

SPOILER!!

good the that the father doesn't shows up. the weather is good the see is smooth so what should the father else do as return?

Life is expensively, only death is in vain

reply

yeah, it happend where i saw this film too...
I myself sit till theather light on...

it was a great film.

9/10

reply

yes the same happened here in Turkey too.everybody was asking each other if the film was over

reply

The same thing happened during Sarajevo screening... I liked the ending very much, it leaves space for interpretation... and it reminds me of Barton Fink ending.

reply

i am sorry, but isn't it almost obvious, that the father won't return? he went out to end his life.

reply

It is obivious that the father will return. Death connects people. Thats the main theme of the movie.

reply

you're both missing the point. it doesn't matter whether the father returns or not; the significance lies in the son seeking him out.

reply

I agree.
But regardless, I thought it was clear he was coming back. It was mentioned at least twice that the father was now fishing regularly in Turkey, so I saw no reason for him not to return from doing so at the end.

Also, its been my experience that many Germans usually wait until the credits are over to get up and leave. It will be interesting to see what people in the US do when it is released, as we usually leave once the credits start.

reply

Hehe, all alternatives listed - typical open ending then i guess. I like the idea that the significance lies in the son seeking him out. Although, i also had a feeling he just keep sailing into the setting sun, never to return alive. He gave us enough hint about it, he was tired of life, tired of getting old (he said it himself at the hospital). He had just killed a women, how can anybody live with that anyhow. It's actually better if he didn't return.. i think - the son had his revelation, and he would just ruin it all with his bad behavior and attitude. I actually sat there hoping he didn't return. It was a perfect ending.
The audience sat through the credits at my cinema as well (Norway). And i think they were all pretty happy with it.

reply

I read all the credits as well after watching the movie at home alone...
Music makes you do that, it is very smooth...

reply

Yeah, I was interested too if there will be something more, so I just pressed Fast Forward button and really waited. :-)) Maybe it's good trick in cinema to watch credits, but it's useless at home cinema, where can anyone just fast forward credits.

There is not a direct point. You choose your own point. You simply can't tell. There is no answer. The answer is inside every one of us.

Yeah, same thing happened here in Sweden today. Everyone sat until the end of the credits. Beautiful movie!

reply

In Paris the same happend...it's amazing how the reaction is the same all around the world.. a new kind of credits, never seen before, trully orignal, congrat's to the cinematographer/producer/director...

reply

Funny thing actually because I saw this film the day before yesterday with the guys from my german class. And even though they said afterwards that the film was so boring, almost everybody remained in their seats untill the rolling credits came up.

I guess they didn't expect the film to end like that.
Anyway I thougth it was awesome!
8 out of 10 from Sweden!

reply

The only reason people stay through the credits is to see if there's more going to happen. It's a trick, which I didn't like.

You fools who say the father obviously returns or is obviously dead.......the point is that it's all in our own interpretation to decide what it means. Obviously (sic)

Fantastic film though.

reply

Hehe, good trick, I just sped the film up, took me about 20 seconds and I realized there was nothing there. BTW - I see people here are writing "see" a lot. I am not a native English speaker myself, but it is written "SEA" with an "A". To "see" is obviously something else..:)

One of the main themes is about repent and forgivness. It doesn't matther if the father comes back or not,he forgave his father that was the most important thing. As long as we don't forgive the people we love,we will always carry a burden on our shoulders.

The other time everyone stayed in the auditorium during the closing credits was in The Pianist when the closing credits ran over the main character playing Chopin.

In Edge of Heaven he got to the beach, and it was the same scene as in the poster, and I was hoping the film would end there. And it did.

We didn't see what happened next, we could guess what would happen.

The only thing that would have improved the end was if they didn't have any music during the closing credits, just the sound of the sea. (Ten Canoes had no music during the closing credits and that was a great ending.)

the same happened to me only once when watching Match Point a couple of years ago in a movie theatre in Vienna, i absolutely loved the fact that everyone remained seated!

unfortunately i only managed to watch TEOH by myself on dvd but of course it stayed on way after the credits showd up...amazing movie!

i just posted a comment on it:

In Pasadena, California, USA the audience sat through the credits too, but with the scene still moving and with the music still playing it was a logical thing to do.

I have to ask who was the obit dedicated to? The one written withing the credits of someone born in 1957 and died in 2007?

The ending is up to the viewer to figure out for himself, as they toasted in the movie, "to death" which can bring about life.

Andreas Thiel, one of the producers, who died in Istanbul while the film was being shot. He co-founded Corazón International with Fatih Akin and Klaus Maeck.
He also played the clerk at the German consulate.

reply

Oh, thank you.

I always watch the credits and I am now noticing more and more people stay for the credits as well, I wish theatres could realize that for some people the credits are a part of the experience and we could do without the big house lights. I am not saying no lights just not the big ones, same a for the previews. that way those who wish to leave can do so and its less irratating to those who wish to stay.

reply

people stayed because there was still an image on the screen. What? you think people just like starring at lots of Turkish names for nothing?
