Will they ever meet?

I just watched this movie at Sarajevo Film Festival, and I realy liked it. It was different than Head-on, movie I actualy like more, it was slower and deeper, I would say. It progressed, since half of it, almost as a soup opera, with this almost twists of faith, but so much more complex. I just waited for stories to cross (although I did not predict it), and I just wanted to see how these very different characters interact with one another. I'm wondering, since it has an open ending, what do you think: will they ever meet (Nejat and Ayten)? I'm also thinking about the first encounter of Susanne and Ali, could be interesting :P Great movie.

I think it's a completely fitting ending to leave it open whether or not they'll meet, but even if they do, won't Ayten still be using her fake ID name Gul Korkmaz? Perhaps there's no need for her anymore now that she's made a deal with the authorities, but just imagine the whole bunch staying tgether for days or even weeks and never finding out who's who.... I wonder if that would be taking the whole scenario over the top, or exactly in line with the theme of life based on chaos and coincidence with very rarely things working according to some plan or logic

I think they'll meet, yes. It's left open, of course, but I think Ayten will stay with Susanne for quite some time and Nejat will find out who she is once he returns. That's how it plays out in my mind anyway... ;)

ok but the whole idea abt this movie is that people get connected thru fate and death, so i dont think they will actually meet or come to know abt their connection. The main reason why the guy actually bought that bookshop was to find that girl and he actually gets frustrated in one scene when his friend asks him if he has heard frm her.. and then he gets all emotional speaking to Lottes mother and then leaves to search for his father. I personally think he will never come back to that bookshop leaving it to the grieving mother and indirectly helping the bereaved daughter..

I don't see how them meeting in the end contradicts with the movie's theme of fate and death.
That's a nice idea about him leaving the bookshop to Lotte's mother and thereby helping Ayten though. On the other hand, culture and especially literature are very important to Nejat, so I don't really see him staying with his father and becoming a fisherman. I guess it's left completely open. I could even see him returning to Germany (but not working as a professor again).

***spoilers***

Nejat's hope to help Ayten Öztürk is already fulfilled, both by housing Lotte and then her Mother. So the "mystery" here is that he's already done what he had hoped--indirectly of course--by helping others. Nevertheless his real work, the peace he seeks, the forgivness of Ali, is where he finds "heaven"; and, how that comes about is what is so moving and amazing about this film. It touched me the way Dostoevsky's work does. I can't think of a higher compliment.

reply

Agreed.

Officially, he "gives up" when he pulls down the last faded poster from the board in the bookshop, "Have you seen this woman?" The irony of course is that he's already completed his goal and that neither he nor Ayten know it.

The narrtive puts the viewer in the same position as the characters: We don't know what will happen. But to have faith that--through our good efforts--all will end well is the best we can hope for...which turns out to be quite a bit given what evolves in the film.

The impression I had at the end of the film was that it could happen pretty quickly.

What connects the three remaining characters is Bremen. Lotte's mother could easily mention Bremen to Nejat, who would say 'hey, I'm from/grew up in Bremen', and Ayten would say 'My mother lives there'....eventually the details could come out.

Me too. There are other possibilities in addition to Bremen.

Since Suzanne has Nejat's apartment for a few days, she had Ayten live there. Since Nejat is a good host, I think that Suzanne and Ayten would try to tidy up his place and eventually see the flyers with Yeter's picture. That's one possibility.

Another is that Nejat would return with Ali and meet Suzanne who would ask to keep renting the room because of "unfinished" business of making sure Ayten can restart her life. As there is an openness between Suzanne and Nejat, the story would come out.

Or Nejat and Ali could meet Suzanne and Ayten at Nejat's apartment and Ali would say something to Ayten like "you remind me of someone" and so on and so forth.

As long as Nejat doesn't give up on finding Ayten, I see the recognition and reunion happening.

I believe all it takes is for Suzanne to call Ayten by her real name, which she certainly knows.
