I am probably going to watch it this weekend simply because there are three very attractive men in it, Javier Bardem, James Franco and Billy Crudup. I don't care if Julia's character finds herself or not I'm there for the eye candy!

Well it's not Shakespeare or whatever but if you just want to pass a couple of hours looking at nice scenery, watching all that gorgeous food and wine being consumed and eyeing a few attractive men in my case well why not. I loved Javier Bardem in The Sea Inside and the Dancer Upstairs and I'm sure James Franco has done better films, ditto Billy Crudup and Julia Roberts but whathis name just wouldn't let me have my fun without commenting how idiotic we women are which is a bit of a p...r really :)) Shaft (1971) Saturday Night Fever and Rebecca (the Olivier version) are three of my favourite films and I didn't watch them for the men, scenery or food :)).

Why do uneducated people keep saying "It's not Shakespeare"? Shakespeare was the mass entertainment of its time. Even if it has colourful use of language, Shakespeare's work was the equivalent of today's summer movies and rom coms.

I hate this film too but this comment is so stupid i cant believe you would embarrass my gender by utterring it. Its obviously false you dont even have to think hard to realise it, was megan fox in the transformers films because shes a great actress? i think not. In fact 90 per cent of successful actresses out there in a male dominated industry are usually successful or casted because of their looks first, while this doesnt mean men only go to watch movies purely for eye candy its obviously still a big factor in putting bums on seats.

... I agree, and I think that men go and watch movie like Fast and Furious 39, and especially Transformer 67 especially because of the visual effects and the nice cars, which both get into the eye candy definition.

I would go as far as to say that most of the big block busters, and the vast majority of american cinema is filled mostly with eye candy content, and a lot less with intelligent plot, real life truths or mind blowing thoughts about our world. Action scenes, special effects, nice looking actors/actress with confident attitude and clever punch-lines, car, luxury stuff, all are there of their eye candy purpose. This is all what american cinema is all about.

To say otherwise, or to think it is true only for a gender, is to be totally blind.

I agree to a point. They put beautiful women and occasionally nudity in films for the benefit of men.

But yes, I surprised at how many women I know that will pay good $$$ to watch Cr*ppy movies just because they have handsome leading men. It seems women are more "looks" obsessed than men these days.

By the way, is Javier Bardeem a hot guy? I would be afraid he would knock a hole in my brain with his hydrolic slug machine.

And I guess porn is watched because of the wonderful plot, exquisite dialogue and nuanced acting.

I agree. I watched about 45 mins and then went to do laundry or clean the toilet or something more pleasant. If I have time to kill, I might watch it all the way through - or just stare at the ceiling, which would be less irritating. I thought this film was trite, superficial, cliche-ridden and Julia Roberts was a corpse. One of the tenets of feminism is that a woman doesn't need a man to be a whole person. This film heads in the opposite direction. Shouldn't be considered a feminist film.

I completely agree...it's probably one of the worst movies I've ever seen!I felt I needed to have a bucket close to me while watching it,just in case I felt the sudden need to vommit!I rented it and was like,well it's Julie Roberts which is a pretty good actress visiting Italy,India and Bali,how bad can it be???Turns out it couldn't be worse if she was visiting Hell...hell,that probably would have made a better movie!

I have to agree, I'm about 40 minutes into it.

So far I have Julia doing laundry, Julia eating in restaurants, with close up shots of food(is this a cooking show?).

Not interesting at all, and it could have been.

Watch "Summertime" with Katherine Hepburn from 1955, about a 40 something schoolteacher who isn't married who goes to Italy.

This stinks.

I fully agree.I watch everything that has India in it. I started reading about India when I was 14 ,travelogues, histories even some old bigoted accounts by missionaries in the late 1800's. Yes,I could tell the difference between truth and lies even back then. But it was 1965.So near and yet so far. We had race riots, black power, and our own sit-ins. "All you need is Love" Right?
The movie offended me. It was a fairy tale meant for idiots. India has all the answers to everything. There are no answers.There are only more questions. And eye-candy? If you watch movies for eye-candy, you and Trump have a good time. I watch for content,a good score, even a cameo by Derek Jacobi but not eye-candy.

This movie appeals to many kind of people with depression, identity crisis, detached from spirituality, no emotional. Only people experienced some semblance of life journey can understand that. As i said, this film does not appeal for happy person although the message is focus on the inner peace to keep preoccupied with the happiness [forcefully] which is not same as being happy. At the end, she took a risk which will determine between forced happiness and real happiness inside her. I can understand why people find vague about the message in this movie, but it is slow-paced film for a reason coupled with the extensive process to undergo the journey to find yourself.
