Before I watched the film I thought it was a true story, but I have some doubts about it now I watched it. Does anyone know?

Yes, it was based off the real life murder of Nicole Damatt. She was murdered by Patrick McIntyre who's brother Todd was her boyfriend. Here is a link to an article about the murder and the trial. Patrick McIntyre never gave a reason why he killed her. But he did make a full confession to the killing and got life in prison. His mother quit the police force after the trial.
