very slow and stupid movei, how dare it be compared to Woody Allen

Hi,
I saw this movie in Amsterdam, where I live, I am 64 and watched with my 18 year old niece and her friend. We all wanted to leave before the movies' end, it was very mediocre, not funny and very very slow. the plot idea was good, the acting also, but somehow it did not work, I found it boring. I am n NY very often and understand what the movie wanted show me but was/am very disappointed/

Did we see the same movie? I probably see the movie in the same cinema as you (movies in Amsterdam) and although there were only a few people there i heard laughs (and saw tears) from almost anyone present.

Perhaps you went to the movie with wrong expectations? the slowness of the movie and the way characters interacted with each other made me deeply relaxed.

I suggest you and your niece go to Sex in the City next time as that is probably a movie better suited to your image of NYC.

we can speak dutch of course, I am dutch also. Believe me, I've seen SATC , and that one is fairly silly also, but there I know what to expect and enjoy it.
This movie was not funny, I go to New York very often, several times a year , this year I was there in april and june, am going again in 3 weeks and know Manhattan as well as Amsterdam, although the East side, where this movie was shot, I know less well. But the people are very familiar and recognizable to me. especially the old lady, who was stereotyped but nevertheless the star of the the show.

Did you see the film in that Art Nouveau cinema? Last time I visited Amsterdam, I saw a film there. God, what a beautiful place to watch a movie!

PS: I enjoyed the film very much. I thought it was a lot better than Woody Allen's more recent efforts like "Vicky Christina Barcelona" and "Match Point".

reply

Yes, that's where I saw it. I am Dutch, live in Amsterdam and that's my favorite movie theater. I go there very often.

I was disappointed, have to admit that I was too with Matchpoint and VCB, until I saw them again. especially Matchpoint is so Wooddy Allen.
VCB i sell asleep, but may be that was jetlag too, I saw that in NY.
the laat WA movie. about the comedian was excellent, I thought.

It would be my favourite cinema, too! I live in Glasgow and my favourite one there is in a lovely Art Deco building. It's funny how watching a film in a nice place improves the experience so much. I go to multiplexes sometimes, but the atmosphere just isn't the same.

Maybe I'll watch "Match Point" again and maybe I'll like it better. But I lived in London for many years and I just didn't recognise the type of people portrayed. To me, Woody Allen really captures the spirit of New York in his older films, but he didn't capture Britain or its people very well. It was clear that it was someone looking in from the outside with no intimate knowledge of it.

New York is a wonderful place. I envy you visiting there so often.

I have lived in London for 20 odd years, and even in Glasgow, for a week, had to replace someone for work.
matchpoint is certainly not my favourite WA movie, but the thing with the wedding ring, ,ade it a WA film. the characters were out of character for WA and yet they were his characters.

Did you like Glasgow or was it not long enough for you really to get an impression of it? I expect you probably didn't have time to visit the Glasgow Film Theatre?

I think they may have been Woody Allen characters, but they didn't ring very true to me. But then I know WA is not know for his social realism so maybe I was expecting too much. I will try and watch it again with a more open mind when it's next on television.

Well don't act like it is completely objective to say this movie is bad or not. It's not Cats and Dogs or something. Please Give was an interesting film bursting with originality. The reason why it's compared to Woody Allen is because of the Manhattan setting and that it has a lot of dry, quick witted comedy and we follow characters more than a plot. It's not a "how dare they compare" but perhaps, "I can see that, but it's more flawed than Woody." I loved pretty much every single moment of this movie. I understand not everyone appreciating the comedy in this. It's like a Noah Baumbach movie in the way the comedy is done. The characters are flawed, they are jerks, and we are supposed to dislike their actions. But even when they were at their worst it is pretty funny. For example, when Mary is talking in front of her grandmother about what they will do with her apartment after she dies. It's awful, I feel bad for the grandma, I hate Mary, and I feel the awkwardness of Kate's position. Or how about the way the grandmother mistreats everyone? I feel like crap laughing at some of these moments, but they are funny and hold great emotion as well. It's not uncommon for people to dislike something like Please Give or a Noah Baumbach film, but I can't stand when people think that their opinion that it's bad is the only opinion out there.

well,

I am in Manhaatan right now on vacation. I love Woody Allen.
The characters in Please give, are quite familliar to me. especially the grandmother. Also Mary, it hit a nerve, I really know people like the gandmother and more like Mry.
wha bothere me about the movie is that is was very slow, and 'explained' to much. as I said, I was with my 18 year old niece an her friend and I really had to stop them from walking out. we are all jewish, we all know people like grandma and maybe we ere embarassed. my main complaint was that is was to slow, you get the point after 1/2 an hour.
never mind, I hope to see better movies while I am here in the USA and I am glad someoeone likes Please give.

reply

I enjoyed Please Give very much. I don't think it's anything like a Woody Allen film. In fact, I think a lot of Woody Allen's films are slow and stupid, especially the later ones.

Horses for courses, I guess :)

well, we cannot all be the same, you're of course entitled to your opinion

OF COURSE W.A. IS A GENIUS, THAT'S WHY I WAS NOT AMUSED WHEN "PLEASE GIVE" WAS COMPARED TO W.A. MOVIES.
ITS LIKE COMPARING APPLES AND PEARS AS THEY THEY SAY HERE IN HOLLAND. THE ONLY THING IN COMMON WAS THE LOCATION, NEW YORK.
"PLEASE GIVE"did nothing for me , was slow, BUT I AM GLAD FOR THE DIRECTOR/ACTORS ETC. THAT some PEOPLE LOVED THIS MOVIE.
TO BE HONEST, AS A GREAT FAN OF WOODY ALLEN, AND DON'T FORGET, I AM DUTCH, SO I SEE HIM DIFFERENTLY THEN OTHERSS, THERE HAVE BEEN MOVIES OF HIM THAT I DID NOT LIKE AS MUCH, BUT OVERALL, HE IS BRILLIANT.

SO ENJOY THECOMING MOVIE SEASON, I JUST CAME BACK FOR A VISIT TO MANHATTAN AND a.THERE IS A LOT OUT THERE, COMING THIS FALL, INCL. new W.A.
