The Level Of Ignorance On This Board...

It's deafening. I'm black, I'm a female, and when I first started watching the movie, I was very moved by it. I found it to be a very, very good movie. Its the first movie I have ever seen with Sandra Bullock (She really is a great actress!), and race, political crap, and personal opinions, be it wrong or right, never entered my mind...until I saw this message board while watching the movie for the first time....JUST NOW.

In the end, this movie was great to me, and it looked like a story that my mom, who works in mental health, tells that happens once in a blue moon to the "clients" she has to visit. Except, she sees the way Michael Oher lived also being lived and endured by white people, black people, asians, hispanics, etc...all with kids who are JUST LIKE MICHAEL OHER. The VERY same in some cases.

In the end, none of the ignorance on this board changed my mind about how I felt about this movie. I loved it and I'll watch it again and again. Just my opinion on that. How you all got race, politics out of it, I'll never understand and don't want to. Brings out the worst in people and in the end, I haven't seen not one person on here leave each other respecting each others viewpoints, people's backgrounds, or respecting each other IN GENERAL.

That's all I wanted to say since there are people on here who were too afraid of what people on the other side of their computer screens will think of them.

agreed. very well put.

i found it to be less about his race and more about the fact that he's a person who suffered tragic trauma in his life, and is trying to deal with it... and getting no help from anyone until this family came along.

aren't we all dealing with some trauma, no matter how small?

It's simple really, that's because we are an individualistic society. We focus on ourselves, our own independence, and freedom. Thus, because we are a society built on self-centered attitudes, many of the times we lack empathy. We lack the understanding of seeing it through another person's perspective, because we are only capable of looking at things through our own lenses and our own perspective.

For example, you will often find splits within viewpoints between caucasian and black individuals, and often you will see black individuals claim that caucasian individuals can't understand their viewpoint because of how you are treated in the world for being black.

But the point illustrates that many who state this does the exact same thing, viewing this movie through their viewpoint instead of through a viewpoint of someone whose adopted.

I'm adopted by a family of a different race, and I personally can relate a lot through the film because many of the experiences Michael had, I also had as well. But just like it seems that many white people cannot understand a black person's experience, many black people cannot understand an adoptee experience.

In the end, it's all through the eyes of our own perspective, and our lack of empathy towards people who have different experiences than our own.

Ebony, the downside of the internet is that it brings out the points of view of the most ignorant people in society, that would otherwise have no voice at all.

I also have to agree with babybro1984 that too many people have a hard time to see the world through anyone elses eyes. My ex wife was like that. Anything she couldn't perceive with her own eyes & mind, she just could not understand. It's frustrating to say the least.

reply

Just because the film is about something nice, it doesn't mean it's good. I thought this film was terrible. That does not mean that I can't "see the world through anyone else's eyes", it just means I DIDN'T THINK THIS FILM WAS ANY GOOD.

Seriously, some people need to come down from their high horses. From down here, all your arguments just sound like nonsense.

reply

I DIDN'T THINK THIS FILM WAS ANY GOOD.

And you're entitled to your own opinion, even if you scream it. I disagree, and so did (evidently) AMPAS.

reply

I have no problem with you liking this film. I only have a problem with people making assumptions about me (and my relative level of ignorance) because I don't. That is all.

reply

I don't think I am making any assumptions about you based on you liking or not liking one particular movie. If I gave that impression, I apologize.

reply

You made absolutely no sense. So, let me get this straight.

You're basically saying that I am ignorant for expressing that I like the movie and that that was the wrong thing to do because normal people with full function brains don't do that. But, it's alright for people to express that they hate the movie and because people hate the movie, that automatically qualifies as a bonafide fact that its a bad movie because YOU and others say so because of some personal demons and hangups that you have within yourself? So, because I said I liked the movie, I am an ignorant fool because I decided to have an open mind and enjoyed the movie for the story that it told, not caring if its true or not, but just enjoyed it for the movie that it was and, again, that makes me ignorant because my personal view is different from the norm. A norm, that I have the honest to God right of thinking, that is ignorant?

You're actually trying to tell me that I am wrong for having a difference in perspective and opinion because of a movie that YOU don't like? You actually possess the unmitigated gal to think that you can tell me how to feel and think about a movie because YOU don't like it? Are you serious? Is that really what you just tried to do when you don't know me from Adam?

No, sweetheart. The ignorance came from you just as sure as the sky is blue and people like you are the kind that I dubbed as being BENEATH me mentally. I can't waste time on people like you because if I do, that means I have to step down from MY standard and be as simple-minded and gullible as YOU are in order to be considered "cool" and "mentally sane". I've never done that and never will and I will never conform to people of the lowest intelligence such as yourself. You really must have confused me for someone who actually is stupid enough to bend down with lips on your butt and say "Oh, you're right! I was so stupid to like this movie! Duuuuh--eee!"

Get over yourself.

I totally agree with you. And remember, this is a movie, BASED on the life of Michael Ohr. Now, if it was a biography it would never have been made into a movie, but a documentary. I found it entertaining, and got it that he had a hard life, the family that took him in, gave him his chance in having a life beyond the terrible poverty he had endured.

I did not see a race card in this, I saw that Lianne Touhy, was already a strong woman was also successful, with a loving husband who had a kind heart. What more could be asked?

The only thing "deafening" is the sound of the loud gust of wind that rushed by as you flew down from on high at top speed with your cape flapping in the wind to save Massa from harm.

How you all got race, politics out of it, I'll never understand and don't want to.

No kidding you don't want to.

You know, you coons enrage me.

Willful, deliberate ignorance, as told straight from the horse's mouth.

Well, Admitting you have a problem may be the first step of a 12 step program, but for some of you, the cure will not be forthcoming. And we're tired of trying to wake you people up.

Honestly, you didn't even have to go there and call someone a name just because they liked the movie. Now that IS ignorant (and just plain stupid) on your part. She said she likes the movie, so get over yourself. I have major problems with it too, even though I've only seen half of it. Unfortunately, a lot of folks are not going to see the film for the usual "white savior" Hollywood trope story it is,a nd all the yelling and name-calling won't change that. Just agree to disagree and leave it at that.

Lovely post.
I feel the same. Except, ,,,, Every movie on imdb is filled with ignorant comments. They are unfortunately not reserved for this movie alone. Many times in the excitement of a recent watched movie, i have come here to share my feelings, only to see the most unthinkable and disagreeable things written.
I'm glad you choose to ignore them,, a trick i learned early?Don't respond to the negative posts, it feeds their negativity

Frankly autocorrect, I'm getting a little tired of your shirt
