'Laughlin' Producer Thinks CBS Yanked Show Too Soon

Deborra-Lee Furness, who with husband Hugh Jackman, co-produced Viva Laughlin, which was canceled this week after two episodes, expressed disappointment today (Wednesday) that CBS did not give the show more of a chance to prove itself. "I think it takes a while for us to get used to things," Furness remarked in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald.Noting that "doing a drama that is a musical is going to be a huge risk," Furness said that in show business risks are necessary. "The fact that it got canceled after two shows, it happened fast and you've just got to dust your knees off and get onto the next one. We're [the Jackman's production company Seed] still looking at scripts and still developing and you just keep going."

Thanks for sharing Furness' thoughts...I can't agree with her enough!

Set aside the critics and the shows mainstream America is accustomed to watching season after season...This wasn't to be one of "those" shows, and made people open their minds further. Not much, as the (few) misucal numbers were to be blended into a murder mystery, family drama, Davey vs. Goliath situation, and who knows what more. CBS knew that going in, and knew that as off-putting as it would seem to many at first, Viva Laughlin would need to be nurtured differently that others in order for it to succeed.

THAT is where they failed miserably.

It's like they couldn't get rid of it quickly enough, removing it from the CBS website immediately, and leaving no opportunity for viewers to voice their opinions to the network. Why the heck even bother to air the "series" if they had no faith in the show? Maybe they had addressed the dialogue, or the lip-synching, or heck, even Melanie Griffith...as those were beefs of many. A lot of people worked really hard on the show -- obviously THEY wanted it to succeed.

Too bad CBS didn't.

I agree with the producers of Viva Laughlin, if CBS gave it more time the ratings will improve.

It looks like the executives at CBS doesn't know what they are doing. I think they'll axe some of their new shows like Cane or Moonlight; although they might make another spin-off of CSI and call it CSI:San Francisco...I guarantee it...j/k :)

I guess I'll watch some other shows on NBC, Fox, or ABC whenever I have time.
