If it wasn't a musical....

If it wasn't a musical, do you think it would have faired better?

I was totally stoked when I saw the commericals for it because 1) I love Laughlin 2) I love Hugh Jackman 3) I love television dramas so I thought this was a win-win-win situation for me. Then the singing started...and kept going. I was actually kind of embarassed everytime they broke into song.

But, despite the singing, I actually thought the plot was really good. If I hadn't had plans last night, I would have tried to watch the 2nd episode just to see if I could get past the musical factor.

I read somewhere that there hasn't been a musical on TV for 20 or so years.
Maybe there's a reason.

When I find myself in a tight spot, I just ask myself "What would Jayne Cobb do?" Well, besides bring guns and grenades and...

The last one was the infamous 'Cop Rock' I believe. And critics have said that those songs were atleast catchy at times. I think if it wasn't a musical it would've stood a chance. To tell you the truth I gave it 10 minutes before I shut it. I have a very short attention span...

I like the plot but may be it would work if the actors had stronger voices...if they had a singing background...But I love hugh jackman so I want it to do well...

This show was fine, in my opinion, removing all the musical crap.

Ok, this has been bothering me for the past week... why are people SO against musicals? and musicin tv shows? and people singing? Are you SCARED of something different?

"Oh no! it's 'musical crap,' shut it offfff! there shouldn't be singing! I am used to shows that have the same plot devices! something new would make me have to think in a whole new way!"

I loved it. It was something new, something I could really get into because I hadn't seen anything like it before on tv. and it's a shame it's gone and about to be replaced by the 147th season of "The Amazing Race."

That was my rant.

goodbye.

I'm not scared of musicals at all. In fact, I quite enjoy them.

In this case though, it was just too distracting from the flow of the show. The story line was wonderful, the characters were great, but the music was distracting.

I hate musicals. I don't like to see most people sing and dance. Music is not that important to me.

In any case, the show was fine... removing all the musical crap. This show didn't need it, and it's the reason it failed.

This show could've been fairly entertaining without the music. The plot was decent and with the star power of Hugh Jackman, Melanie Griffith and Madchen Amick, it could've lasted a few seasons at least.

I normally hate musicals, although sometimes they can be ok like 'Moulin Rouge', but within the context of this show it just felt forced, awkward and unnatural, which is what killed it.

Also like others have said the advertising of the show made it look like a drama about gambling and family life, which is what people expected to see, but they were blindsided by a musical disaster from hell.

Horrible promotion and the musical aspect are the two things that killed the show.

I really liked this show, at first I thought the music was really silly but then I began to like in a Rocky Horror Picture Show sort of way. I want to see more.

I love musicals, Buffy's was amazing. But, maybe if the songs were any good than I would've enjoyed it.

Truthfully, after watching the second episode (which had a lot less singing) I realized that the music was the only thing that made the show bearable. Without the music "distracting" you, you could see all the stupid overused storylines that were incredibly uninteresting and pointless. Without the music, the show becomes a really annoying thing that really would have never been picked up.

Without the music, we would have just been left with bad writing and a ridiculous plot.
