Alexander's Motive?

I did not understand Alexander's (the ''fry cook'') motivation for conspiring to kill most of his artist colleagues. This is not really explained in the film.

Come to think of it, most of Alexander's decisions don't make sense. Why did he pretend he was rich and and was willing to offer grant money? Is it because the character just mentally deranged or did I miss something?

I felt like Alexander was basically a manipulative psychopath who not only wanted to see people killed but also enjoyed pulling the artists' strings and pitting them against one another. He also understood that after he had his fun he would have to eliminate the witnesses.

The thing with the grant money was just a means to get the artists to play his game.

I'm coming into this thread late, but just watched the movie. His motives were explained. He was killing the artists because their work would be worth more money if they were dead. He was going to sell it all for a higher profit after he killed them.
