All I can say is wow!

Let me say that I am not a fan of horror movies, but when I have nothing to do I like to sift through the "horror" section at the local Blockbuster to try and find a movie that just looks aweful. Of course, seeing a movie called "Murder Party" I knew if this was horror, it had to be bad.

I was pleasantly surprised to find this was a brilliant comedy and far from the crap that I was originally looking to find. I will go as far as saying this is my new favorite movie and I will be showing this to all my friends.

Hell, this movie made me come on this web site for the first time(yes, I know, I know) and want to praise it and let everyone know it is worth it.

I was also copy the sentiments of others in that I am not returning my copy to Blockbuster. It will be worth the $9.99 they will charge me.

Another cast/crew shill.

Don't be fooled by all the positive reviews. This movie is not even worth a free download. Avoid at all costs, literally.

reply

It's Jeremy, director of MURDER PARTY. Just decided to check in on the boards for the first time in a long time.

While I'll stay out of any debates about the film, I can assure you we have no shills planting positive posts on our behalf.

For the record, I think the film is 71% good and 29% cruddy. But I'm biased.

Inytum, please accept my apologies for wasting your precious time.

bigkev625, much thanks for the kind words!

Also, thanks for this movie! I'm happy I came across it. I look forward to other of your works in the future.

I thought the film was a lot of fun and well worth my time. I didn't expect a big budget extravaganza, but I also didn't expect it to be so funny. Too many horror films made on a small budget do not have intelligent scripts, relying too much on gore and gratuitous sex to sell them. The sex in this was not gratuitous, just hilarious. The gore was exactly what I expected. I especially loved the treatment of pompous people who will call the most ridiculous tripe "art." Bless the people who made this movie for having a rare instance in horror in which the dog has an important (and cute) place. I avoid horror flicks in which pets appear because they usually come to some terrible (and gratuitous) end. It is a big deal, to me, when they are treated this well as characters. Finally, this may be the best ever performance by a protagonist who is limited to what he can say with only his eyes during most of the story. Good job, Christopher Hawley.

So, Jeremy, if you read this, I enjoyed the smart writing, as well as the total film. On a shoestring, I think it is much better than 71% good.

I'm a be real whi'chu, Jeremy: This is one of my favorite films of all time, freshman blemishes and all. Much like Shawn of the Dead, it's the plot of a horror film with the wit of a great comedy while never becoming trite enough to feel like something as obnoxious as a "horror comedy". I won't say it's one of a kind. It's like one of four (the other 2 in that list are Ghostbusters and Big Trouble in Little China.) Now that's a list worth being on, in my book.

"If I disappeared tomorrow... no one would notice. I didn't even tell anybody I was going to a Murder Party."

The delivery of that line alone makes me want cry/laugh/give that dude a big hug every time.

I wonder if that was actually Jeremy Saulnier

He's a quickly-rising star. He's worked with Netflix and HBO now. Directed Sir Patrick Stewart, Mahershala Ali, Alexander Skarsgaard. And back then he found it worthwhile to make an account just to respond to one dumbass shitposter

Why would you automatically jump to that thought? Is it so hard to believe that there are people out there that actually enjoy this movie?? I also came across it by browsing a video store and loved the cover and though it would totally appeal to me and it did, and now it's part of my Halloween movies month.

So maybe troll around other posts for movies you actually enjoy, why try to get people to hate it just cause you did?

@davorm:
Actually, yes, it is. I could believe someone moderately enjoyed it, as the whole movie viewing experience in general is very personal and subjective. But the sort of praise in the OP for this particular movie is just not believable to me at all ("brilliant", "new favorite movie", "not returning my rented copy"). That combined with the well known fact that so many films DO have shills hanging around iMDB forums to plug movies they are associated with, I'm (still) inclined to think that is the case here, too.

As far as trolling goes: I have actually seen this movie and regretted spending my time on it. I'm not trying to make anyone hate anything, but as the OP posted their opinion, I decided to post my opposing view to at least provide some sort of balance. I feel that way someone can make up their mind to see the movie more fairly, as opposed to seeing only praise. Why call someone with an opposing viewpoint a troll, just because you liked the movie? (rhetorical question.)

@mrhideous:
Maybe you have shills here -- possibly unelicited, sometimes cast/crew are just overly attached to a project, or friends feel they owe it you out of loyalty -- or maybe you really don't. I couldn't be sure, I just called it as I saw it. An opinion's only an opinion in the end. My hat's off to you for not calling me a troll and for staying courteous though. I wish you good luck in your future endeavours.

This movie found it's way amongst my collection somewhere along the way. I finally sat down to watch it a few months ago and was pleasantly surprised. Well directed and scripted, plenty of LOL moments and a pervasive sense of dread that permeates the film and raises the hackles on my neck. I also loved how at the end there was no epiphany, no hero revelling in his victory, just a dude and his *beep* cat chilling out.

Sure, it wasn't Citizen Kane, but it was creatively handled for the budget it was shot on, and 90% of the elements came off as professionally handled. My only question is whether or not there is something on the horizon for Jeremy and co.? I sure hope so.

I thought it was not bad man.
I was expecting absolute crap and got something that is about a 5.5 - 6.0 out of 10.

It's average but with some good ideas... I really liked the "art" aspect of it and some of the dialogue was interesting.
It was funny in places and serious/tense in others.

There are so many awful big budget hollywood horror moves being released that this was a welcome relief and was a pretty decent effort.

Also some subtle (and not so subtle) attacks oon the world of art and artists/collectors.

Definitely worth a watch.

I don't know how it can be anyone's favourite movie and on the flip side, I don't know how people can say it's the worst movie ever.

That's movies for you though huh?

Walter Sobchak: Am I wrong?
The Dude: You're not wrong Walter. You're just an a**hole.

9 years after the film's release and I came onto this board just to sing the movie's praises (it's one of my all-time favorites.) You think they're STILL paying for shills here in 2016 to promote the freshman effort of a man who has made 2 films since then, both of which received almost unanimous praise from critics? Or did they pay for those reviews too? How big do you think this independent filmmaker's PR espionage budget is?

reply

For a full-blown narcissist, yes it's hard to believe that. People like this feel as if they represent the masses. It is unthinkable to imagine, even for a second, that they are in the minority.

Another enemy of the producer it seems.

Maybe he dated some girl you thought was in love with you because she said, "excuse me" to you once. It's unlikely she was actually in love with you. However, I wasn't there so I can't be 100% certain. Anyways it could be best to move on. Also playing hard to get sometimes actually works. So maybe a good luck is in order.

This could've been a South Park episode! And I mean that in the most positive way.

You "likeded" it??

It was just okay. Too much blood and guts in the last third of the film. I give it a 6.5.
