How is should have ended...

Near points out that Light Yagami's name isn't on the deathnote... see Kira's follower would never kill the real kira..

Matsuda: and face it light, you said "I won", that's a confession.

Light laughs manically... (he starts thinking very quickly)

Light: You don't get it do you, I have caught Kira right in front of your eyes.

(everyone gasps)

Light: Recently, Mimi confessed to me that she is the real Kira. I have known for a while that she loves me, she confessed her undying love for me on more then one occasion, but I believe she didn't believe that I loved her yet when we where first met... she waited this long until she was sure that I love her back.. and so she finally revealed her secret to me. I quickly contemplated what I should do... after what me and her have been through I was racking my brain as to what I should do.. I came to the conclusion that even if I rat her out how would I beable to catch the second Kira? I couldn't risk asking her for the location of the second Kira... so I asked how you have been doing this the whole time, and finally about how she contacted the second Kira, she said she used a SMS messages to give orders to the second Kira...
So I sneaked her phone one night and just in case I traced one of the SMS messages she had received to find the location.. then over SMS message with Mimi's phone I gave orders to the second Kira to make sure to have his notebook replaced with a fake one... then to come to this meeting place at the right time and write the names of everyone down except for me Light Yagami (he does as hes ordered, he doesn't question gods will so makes sense)... so that I could catch the second Kira right in front of your eyes.
So you see... I have won... though I was very lucky to have Kira fall in love with me, its ironic that I would be suspected of being Kira, along with the real Kira...

both Kira's are arrested, Mikami Teru kills himself as originally (Mimi confesses because she believes shes doing it for Light, sacrifice herself to protect him.. makes sense)

Lets face it this ending would have been better, it would be more characteristic of Light to lie his way out like he always has, Mimi to sacrifice herself to protect him and actually would get away with it. Though of course they would still be a little skeptically, and theres no way he would get the Deathnote back... but he still has a small piece of a page from the deathnote, he gains the Shinigami eyes with the deal and writes Nears real name in it and plans for him to die suddenly way later on as a suicide/accident so it isn't suspicious.

Or at least end it like they did in the Manga.

Not sure why they changed the circumstances of Light's death in the anime. It was much more sinister to have Ryuk say something like "it's been fun, but now you die" in front of everyone rather then see him sitting on a roof top. The images of Ryuk's eyes and the terror in Light's eyes were so intense and gripping. It was hard to watch Light fall so far in the manga when he was manic and desperate enough to ask Ryuk for help to kill Near. In the manga they also remind the readers that in the beginning Ryuk told Light the owner of the death note was cursed with misfortune when coming into contact with a Shinigami and he would write his name in his book one day. Also they end on a redemptive note in the manga, as Kira still is revered as a god after death (even though his soul/essence has faded to nothingness because of using the Deathnote but his memory lives on in the faithful, and this religious following also demonstrates how faith/worship and trust are often misplaced in a false prophet/messiah) The images and intensity of the scenes in the manga was so much more exciting than the anti-climatic scenes in the amine.

Wait, Mimi = Mikami? And you're referring to Mikami as 'she' when Mikami's a he? Or am I just totally missing something?

I read a fan written ending one time and sometimes Ilike to pretend it is how the show ended.Near "No one will die, I switched the notebooks."Light "Mikimi, did you write in the nootbook, or the loose page I gave you for this situation?"Mikimi "The loose page loard, just as you instructed."Near "Oh shi..." *dies*

reply

Exactly, Light would never gamble on just 1 plan. The last 1/2 of Death Note made him look and act stupid.

Shishiodun ending would have been the real ending.

reply

Exactly, and that's the precise situation which gets me; as soon as I read the ending, as brilliant as Light's plan already was, I kept thinking things like why he didn't have Mikami keep a spare piece hidden on him somewhere like he, Light, did himself? Especially if Light knew that tampering with the Notebook was part of Near's plan? If this was something I could think of, surely Light would have. He did every other time. It actually could've worked to his advantage; have Mikami write in the fake Notebook letting Near think he won (as Near had basically just done to Light), back and forth between the two geniuses, then Light reveals that Mikami had already written on a genuine, separated piece of the Notebook once he had seen Near's name. I've grown to accept the ending as simply 'the good guys have to win'. Really hoped Death Note would take that bold step and have Light win and continue. I was pulling for him from the beginning

"I'll take a potato chip...and EAT IT!!"

reply

While how L faked his death wasn't particularly believable in the movie, the idea of faking his death using the rules of the Death Note itself to defeat Light was brilliant and could've possible been executed better. Can't really think of anything right now but the way L decided to fake his own death based purely on a guess when Watari died, was a little far fetched in the films.

Another great ending would be to have L defeat Light from beyond the grave. How to do this once again I'm not sure.

To have L's number 2 pick up the pieces his mentor left him to avenge L's death by defeating Light would be brilliant too.

reply

He could have ended it all on the first episode. Instead of bothering learning the name of L, he could have just made anyone of his team shoot L in the face. He knew all of their names, and it wasn't a very well hidden secret that they were on L's team, so necessary suspicion.

reply

There's a reason they showed the Death Note rules repeatedly throughout the series, and one of the most repeated rules was thus: if the death of a person in the death note will cause the death of other people not written in the death note, then that person will die of a heart attack. This essentially means you can't make people kill other people, only themselves, so in your example, everyone on L's team would have simply died from heart attacks

*plays the scene in head*

and then it'll end with Light and Mikami laughing like maniacs

I liked your whole ending... except this quote. What was wrong with Aizawa saying that line? Matsuda never has important lines.

Shut up

the ending was perfect, the whole series was perfect.

Touchy!

I agree Light would have had a backup plan.. and a loose sheet would have been the most likely.

But what gets me is that even with saying "I won" and his name being the only name not written down in the book,, this sort of evidence wouldn't stand up in court. All Light would have to do is say nothing, and swallow the note in his watch, Teru wouldn't strike any deal and would most likely kill himself in custody.. The huge trial would take place and I think Light would walk.

There is the huge possibility that Light's DNA/fingerprints could be found on the note Teru was using, but it hadn't been seale and Near was holding it loose, so the treatment of the evidence would void any forensics. Also I can't remember off the top of my head if that note was in custody at any point, giving Light a plausible reason for having his fingerprints over it.

To be honest the most damning piece of evidence is the scrap of the deathnote in the watch, and it's generally not advisible to have conclusive proof of guilt on you at all times.

One question, the pages that Light originally wrote, that would have had his handwriting and fingerprints on it, did he burn these sheets? I guess he did..

reply

Near wan't going to try him, he was just going to personally lock him up some where

reply

I assumed Light would have deduced Near would discover even the real notebook, and ordered Mikami to write down Light's name, leaving someone else off the list.

Light did have contact with that notebook, since it was Misa's notebook. Remember he took it from her and hid it in his pants when he gave up Rem's notebook so it can go to the police, he did this to not loose his memories again.

reply

It could have ended the way the movies ended.

reply

I thought that if Light would have let the fake notebook be, and have him write everyone's name except for N, then everything N would have planned would have back fired horribly. And that would have bought time for Light to kill everyone else...

reply

I actually like the way the series ended. I don't know why so many people don't. I was team L, so obviously seeing Light go down, sent a smile to my face. I know you were told by the first episode, but I found it wonderful that Ryuk was the one to write his name in the notebook. Finally, Light looked defenseless and hopeless; something I've been waiting for since like, episode 3. Admittedly, I wasn't the greatest fans of Near and Mello, because well.... they weren't L. Plus, Mello didn't really even get much of a storyline. But that aside, I'm glad someone brought Light down. My favorite part of the finale was probably Matsuda shooting Light :'). I love Matsuda because he's completely looked down upon. But luckily he couldn't take any more of Light's sheit. And I think Light's name not being written in the Death Note would stand up in court. Firstly, the killings would seize for once, and for always. Secondly, L also has deductions against Light. Also they weren't enough to prove him guilty, if you add what Near has gathered, his case wouldn't look so hot. Thirdly he says, "Near, this is my win" WHAT ELSE COULD THAT POSSIBLY MEAN but "I'm Kira"!?!?! And who's saying Light would have a backup plan? Light hardly ever had a backup plan... his plan A usually always worked. And when it didn't, that's when he made his back up plan. With Lind L. Taylor, he didn't think at all. When he relinquished the DN, had everything not gone as planned, what would he have done? He forgot about everything -- therefore he didn't have a backup plan. Light, as well as L went on a whim for almost everything that they did. So it's unfair to say that Light would have a backup plan when his plan was -- let's admit it -- pretty much full proof. The possibility of that plan faltering is highly unlikely. If I was him I wouldn't have a backup plan either. And what would his back up plan be but covering his own ass? And Light didn't get stupid the second half of the anime, actually. Truthfully, he just made mistakes and holes in his plan -- like any other human most likely would. How on earth was he supposed to know that Near changed the notebook? That's like saying L got stupid. L died because of something that was completely uncontrollable.

This all being said, I didn't read the manga. I can imagine if it's much different, then I would be pretty pissed off as well. Maybe they should have made it like that, but what I saw was also great, and would suffice.

IMO

I am so completely with you, I'm inclined to just quote your entire posting. :D

I haven't read the manga either, but I do have it on order. Looking forward to reading it.

And count me as being also firmly on 'Team L." :)

I would've been more satisfied if, after Light killed L, Ryuk showed up and says "Yeah you've had your run, but I'm bored now so I'm killing you off. I will discard you and rid the world of your evil, just as you so carelessly did with all those other criminals" Light yells in rage "you can't kill me! I'm God, I'M KIRA!!" but it is too late, Ryuk writes his name anyway, and the others are left with the corpses of L and Kira lying on the floor.

Because face it, the part after L died didn't really live up to the series :P

The first time I watched it, I agreed with this wholeheartedly.

I'm on a complete roll with it and have watched it probably a dozen times by now and I have to say, the second half is awesome too, just for a different reason.

Surprisingly, I found myself really starting to like Near, and in some ways I am liking Mello too. Light and Near were getting into each others' heads in the same way that L and Light were (although, not to quite the same extent until the end).

The second half was waiting to see how Light gets caught - or does he win? I hadn't read the manga, so I didn't know, which made 1.28 and A New World especially terrifying. I love the Japanese task force and was really afraid they were all going to die. THAT would have sucked too.

I loved how we got a chance to know the task force members a lot better too. I also found out just how much I could hate a cartoon character. Man, I thought Light/Kira was vile in the FIRST half...

There's too much in the second half that I love, so I no longer wish it had ended with L.
