I don't know if that's because he's a sociopath or whether the backwards Yagami thing means anything. In anime, names usually do mean something. Just found this interesting.

"Yagami" is a real Japanese family name.

Light's last name is spelled with a different kanji character, "Ya" is represented with the character for "night" as opposed to the character for "eight" as the real "Yagami" name is. "Gami" is represented by the "god" character (the Japanese word for "god" is "kami", and also the "god" character is the one used in the real-life "Yagami" name). So Light's last name is technically "Night God", a suitable name for Kira.
