Explain Mello's sacrifice to me

Mello's sacrificing his life is confusing. Keep this in mind:

1. Near said that they didn't think of the possibility of a fake notebook until AFTER they followed Mikami into the bank, where he wrote down Takada's name. Until that, they must have assumed that the note in the gym must have been the real one.

2. Before this, they had already seen Mikami kill using the notebook (even though it was actually Takada who did that, but the SPK didn't know that at this point), when he killed the rapist at the train.

Mello is asked to kidnap Takada, and he realizes he might die, since she probably knows his real name. (Oh wait, here's another problem, if Mello didn't remove his helmet, couldn't he have done this mission but still survived??)

So they convince Mello to do this... Why, exactly?

I know that this made Mikami go to the real notebook, but as Near says in the final episode, they hadn't considered the possibility of a fake notebook until after Mikami went to the bank, so... WTF?

Also, keep in mind that Mello left Takada's box on a table somewhere, and she manages to break the window of the van she's in, get access to a cellphone somehow, and somehow burn herself and her belongings. So, Mello probably wanted to give his own life for this... It's very confusing.

Okay, after thinking about it, I have a theory which could be the explanation:

As we see in the final episode, Lidner had talked to Mello on the phone, probably told him about their plan in order to get his expert opinion on it, and heard Mello say "Only I can do this." in a defeated voice.

So Mello, during this conversation, figured that the notebook in the gym might be fake, and planned the kidnapping plot by his own initiative. In Mello's mind, if Takada dies, Mikami will continue the killings with the real notebook, if there is such a thing, and SPK will follow him and see it.

The reason why he's so sad might be because he realizes the plan would be risky for him and Matt, and/or he might be depressed because Near will be the one to capture Kira physically, but I don't think he plans on dying, because I can see no reason why that would be necessary.

He makes sure that Takada can get to her stuff in the box outside the van (so she can call her accomplices), and he's checked that box for hidden notes, but he didn't think of the possibility of her conceiling a note while undressing, which is why he doesn't mind taking off his helmet.

In the conversation with Lidner, Mello also told her not to tell Near about this plan, just in case Near would try to interfere because it's "unethical" or *beep* it up or try to save Mello or whatever. This is why the possibility of a fake notebook doesn't enter Near's mind until after Mikami goes to the bank.

I really think they should have been more clear about this but here's another theory.

Perhaps when that guy that was tailing Mikimi took out the Notebook while in the gym in the locker should have seen a shinigami after touching the notebook around Mikimi which Mello would have told him. Since they did not see a Shinigami around Mikimi it could only mean he has a fake notebook? I have been wondering just who the hell has Ryuk been hanging around the whole time since we don't see him again until the final episode.

It's a pretty good story but there are a lot of holes. Another hole is just exactly how did they get a hold of the real notebook being kept in a GD safety deposit box in a bank. They kinda glanced over that. Not only did they break in, take the notebook and make a copy, break back in and place the copy in the safety deposit box? Yeah, fkn, right.
