Very disappointing... (spoilers)

...I got this film and watched it yesterday, I have to say it was a big disappointment.

For a start, the picture on the cover, which on closer inspection appears to be a painting, in no way reflects the content of the film. We can see the houses of Parliament in the background, but most of the film takes place on a deserted farm. In the film, we see the same dozen or so people appearing again and again as different zombies. Nothing wrong with that, but they are almost exclusively men and women in the 18-30 range. They're a pretty bland bunch. About 90% of the movie is just dead wood, pointless fillers that add nothing to the story. It's a pretty obvious attempt at a Blair Witch rip off, but it fails miserably on that level.
I will say that there was one particular part that scared the sh it out of me.

All in all it's good to rent but don't buy it. You'll not watch it more than once.

No one jokes when they talk to Terry Tibbs! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVYW-4zPKLE

Nice one Terry Tibbs, I would say you're being very generous with that comment though, but it's always nice to hear from you!

The bit where the reporter guy opens the bedroom door in the farmhouse & sees the zombified farmer & his wife.

I remember watching disk 2 of the Dawn of the Dead and thinking it would be an entertaining movie on its own. Disk 2 BTW, in addition to other excellent features, contains camcorder footage shot by the gunstore owner as he is holding out over the course of a few weeks. I think this is what Zombie Diaries is going for but this is much less effective without the strong narrative of a feature film to give it context.

I think video diaries of a zombie holocaust can work as a feature film but you still need some central character or reference to tie it all together. Blair Witch and Cloverfield both did this very well. These movies kept up the facade of a video journal but gave enough information to develop plot and character. Zombie Diaries basically dropped you into a zombie holocaust with vignettes of characters. Maybe this can work for a real documentary about the gulf war (for example) but again people can take these vignettes in context of a real event. In any case, good documentaries will provide a context anyway through some kind of narrative.

Zombie Diaries was just kind too abrupt. Especially with the murdering sociopath character who almost seemed like a subplot. Motivation for his actions was left completely up to the imagination of the viewer which is not good since the climax of the movie turns on him.

The other thing is...slow moving shuffling zombies are just not effective after Dawn of the Dead and 28 Days. Shaun of the Dead is basically a parody on this and makes it almost impossible to be frightened by this movie.

Yeah I liked the DOTD footage of Andy in the gun store. I thought about the Zombie diaries that the footage of the man getting his finger cut off was just mean spirited... it added nothing and just appealed to the lowest common denominator.

I think slow zombies work better. These are re-animated corpses remember, they're not likely to be to energetic.

I personally prefer slow zombies and I'm not old and wrinkly. Characters always underestimate the danger posed by slow zombies. The get complacent and then they get screwed. As to running zombies, you could plop down just about any ferocious beast in their place and come up with a similar film.

If the zombies are gonna eat us, we might as well be drunk.
