Nicole's 'first' scene

Ok, the particular scene I am talking about is when Guido is signing the headshot of Claudia for the Cardinal, as Claudia. I'm not quite sure what Rob Marshall was trying to convey here.

Why did Nicole Kidman show up in this scene? What was her purpose? He sat in her lap, and signed HER headshot as HER...but she was there. I have a feeling he was "imagining" her, but it just didn't make any sense to me. Now, I'm not upset that she showed up. Nicole Kidman is one of my favorite parts of the movie, so I don't care about that. I'm just confused as to what her presence added to the scene. Does anyone know?

Just as his mother played by Sofia Loren shows up in the movie, in his memories and imagination, so does Claudia in that first scene. She isn't there at the hotel, but Guido is thinking of her because he is making the fake signed picture of her for the Pope.
It was a nice way of first introducing her, this famous movie star that we had heard of but not yet seen, though Guidos thoughts of her.
