Differently

I saw the film and loved it, but clearly I'm in the minority. What was done with the film that was so bad and what could've been done differently? Details, please. Thank you.

I'll give it a shot:

I don't know if I'd feel differently if I was unfamiliar with the stage show. But I was expecting a charismatic Guido, not a brooding Guido. I was expecting a brilliant artist who was feeling lost, and I never saw that. Though he was described as being brilliant and charming and charismatic, we were never allowed to see that side of him. Guido on stage is constantly trying to charm his way out of every bind he gets into, using his charisma to get what he wants from others, and does ultimately attempt to make his film, though it comes crashing down around him. Without that your left with not only no plot, but a character study without a character to study.

I didn't need it to be identical to the stage version, and if they'd found new things to do that were as exciting as what happens on stage, I'd be fine with that. But given that things actually happen in the stage show and they don't in this film, wouldn't it have been better to pluck things that made the stage show so incredible?

Also, there are gorgeous numbers in the stage show that fill Guido's character. "The Bells of St. Sebastien," where we see his childhood repression, arguably one of the best songs in the show. And the heart and soul of the show, "Getting Tall" where Guido is forced to face his younger self who tells him to grow up. Where were these seminal moments of drama?
