Last Season

Please say it isn't so.
I haven't watched the final episode of the FINAL SEASON, however I will soon.
I cannot believe that this really will be the END. We have been watching since Inspector Morse.
Any thoughts on a continuation without Lewis and Hathaway having the lead role.
I hope there is hope.

I'm afraid this is the end, as much as I dislike to admit it. They did leave the door open in the last episode, but it's very unlikely that there will be more.

reply

I'm hoping the same thing. Although endeavor is a great watch.

reply

Why is this the last season? Does Kevin Whatley not want to do the show any longer?

reply

I suspect he may be a bit weary after playing Lewis for nearly 30 years. And he is 65.

He's played the same character for the most part for 30 years.

And not only that I looked at his filming history and he doubled up making another series too (at the same time)!

They did leave it open but in a way he really wanted that respect so he could enjoy himself whilst away.

Not a word of worry about losing their prime pathologist though? Thought that odd.

Nice series ending. They did leave the door open if they want to bring them back.

reply

I hope there's hope too gsmithboyle! I'm really going to miss the show. But I don't think I'd like substitutes -- I'd want Lewis and Hathaway back!

I wonder if there are any plans for Laurence Fox to carry on the tradition -- hopefully with some return engagements by Kevin Whately? Does anyone know?

reply

I hope so. That would be a great idea.

reply

NOOOOOOO! So sad ='-(

reply

Just watched the last episode, and wonders... IF there are no more, why the open ending? 65 is NOT old for an actor, they don't retire, until there are no more roles, and I am sure Kevin has as many jobs as he cares to choose
Of course, personally, I would Love to see Laurence become the "next Doctor" Doctor Who.. he would be a natural, and "who knows" could find his real life wife, "Rose"

reply

That would be ex-wife.
I don't see Laurence as the Doctor. Certainly not after Peter Capaldi; they'll want a totally different character. And Laurence is far too well known as Lewis.

reply

Capaldi was well known too, and Lawrence was the "robin" (Hathaway) Divorced??? Really?
Rose??? Hey ROSE!!!! Write me please

reply

I know Peter Capaldi was well known but he wasn't 100% associated with one role. Laurence Fox however IS Hathaway. He's been playing him for so long that to then have him become the doctor would seem like Hathaway was the doctor, if you see what I mean.

reply

Considering that Peter has at least 1 more season, by then I think Mr. Fox will be ready for another challenge

reply

Of course he was. He was Malcolm. I have never been able to watch him as The Doctor without expecting (and kinda hoping) that he was going to break into an obscene, foul mouthed rant at any moment.

reply

Yeah, he's still called The Sweary Doctor in our house. And the ending of Lewis wasn't an open door, it was an ending. Hathaway held up the "LEWIS" sign that he met him with in the first episode, which completely rounded everything up and showed that they'd come to an end.

reply

Several years ago Kevin Whatley stated in an interview that Lewis would never exceed 33 (named) episodes. This was out of respect for John Thaw and the Inspector Morse legacy. Morse ran from 1987-2000 with 33 episodes. Lewis has run from 2006-2015, with 33 episodes. The additional nine episodes shown on IMDB total (42) is a result of episodes for 2013-2015 being shown in two 45 minutes parts versus a single 1.5 hour showing.
In interviews, Laurence Fox has expressed his desire to move on to other projects. Hopefully he will come back to it at a later date since the door was left open.
Here's hoping there's a Inspector Hathaway series in the future.
Haven't found Colin Dexter's cameo in One for Sorrow yet. Has anyone spotted him?
In Magnum Opus he is seen through tea shop window behind Lewis and Hathaway.
In What Lies Tangled he is seated at outdoor cafe to the right of Lewis and Hathaway.

reply

Really disappointed in this season. Seems like they decided to import a producer from a bad american procedural.
All the thought and subtlety, the easy intelligence of past seasons is missing.
Wonderful acting as always but the writing and direction have gone to hell.
