Why wasn't this taught in schools?

I have just watched this wonderful documentary about a great Australian who decided to take part in a protest to stand up for what he believed was right, and as a 26 year old Australian I am ashamed I had never heard of Peter Norman before this, despite knowing of the famous photograph and the symbolism behind it.

I am also angry and annoyed at the schools (primary and especially secondary) that this wonderful story and act of defiance against prejudice and bigotry isn't featured anywhere in the curriculum.

I will be recommding it to everyone and hope Peter Norman (and the event) finally gets the attention and praise he deserves.

Just saw this wonderful doco. We are showing it to our Year 9 students as part of an integrated project about the organisation of major Games (Olympic, Commonwealth etc..).

i think the fact that he wasn't allowed to make the salute on account of the color of his skin made it difficult and problematic to address in a classroom setting full of impressionable and unassuming children who are taught to celebrates diversity and solidarity.

because "whitey" can only support us, but they cannot partake in the struggle together...because "whitey"

If that's all you took from Norman standing from Smith and Carlos then you're just as retrograde as Avery Brundage.

'Cause I'm Black you think I did it?

reply

No one, except perhaps you, could have been prejudiced enough that you should demean the late Peter Norman by classing him with the autocratic and hypercritical Avery Brundage. A very odious comparison which leads me to conclude that you are clueless as to the history of either man... or perhaps yiu were trolling and couldn't be bothered watching this film in its entirety.
Sad.

He is comparing zachanscom with Brundage because of his ignorant comment, saying if that is all he learned from the documentary, then zachanscom is no better than Brundage

This is my ignore list. There are many like it, but this one is mine

Because there are still those on this earth who still plant the seed of hate, like the man call trump who think he going to be the President of this country.😁

One specific documentary to be "taught" in schools? Grow up, you clearly know nothing about educative processes. It may be utilized as a resource in ongoing investigations into racial discussions, but to suggest that one specific feature be taught to children smacks of brain-washing.🐭
