Did the DVDs not sell well?

The first season was released by AnimeWorks. However, they let go of the title after that and ADVision picked it up and released the second season, FLIGHTS OF FANCY. However, the second season of AH! MY GODDESS! became one of many shows of which ADV sold the rights to Funimation. (This was sometime before ADV went completely bankrupt.)

Did this show not gain enough popularity here in the US? It's an anime of one of the better known and loved manga series, it's got beautiful artwork, the story is solid and the characters are enduring and well fleshed-out. The dub is wonderful, the actors all fit the characters really well. ADV, thankfully, was able to get the same cast of American voice actors to return to their roles for the second season, and the FLIGHTS OF FANCY disks came with voice actor commentaries.

Also, I understand these first two seasons are all that have been made so far of the TV series. So, did the show not do well in Japan, either? I mean, there's so much more manga to cover!

There is a third season, technically it's the 2008 20th Anniversary special. But it continues the story from season one, and season two and has the same director, animation, and voice cast. It's currently only available on DVD in Japan.

Media Blasters said season one didn't sell well for them, but this could be because they had huge difficulty meeting the DVD release deadlines and only people following the releases closely could know when they came out. ADV had better luck with season two but sold it [not due to low profits] but due to trying to save them from bankruptcy.

More season have been halted in Japan, mainly due to the team currently working on the Evangelion movies. When 3.0 and 4.0 are done, Hiroaki Goda has stated his interest in continuing the series with a fourth season and has made it know he wishes to adapt the whole mange into the anime.

That's good news, so there is hope for more than the 2 episodes being released in 2011?

reply

No, but if the last Eva movie comes out when it's supposed to, there's hope of a new season in 2014 or 2015.
