One of my friends just told me that enabling a cheat gnome really screws up your game...can anyone please verify one way or the other if it's true or not?

there is a 5/10 chance there is a problem that occurs it has occured on mine lately and that was like one month after i discovered using the cheat gnome. a few gliches happen such as your pets sinking into the grass the game stopping completely. heres a piece of advice if you use the cheat gnome always save you game data before going to the town square because you cant save once your there and it some times slows down and stops. if i were you i would save the game every 30 minutes before you get further into the game.
