I was wondering the same thing. Some parts really made me start thinking. I really was convinced by the end this was another "Blair Witch" type thing. It was an interesting film though.

I think it was fake from the ending which seemed a bit contrived but other than that the movie blew me the *beep* out of the water. I saw it on A&E the other week. Amazing idea and amazing direction. If this was real though then I think it will go down as one of the best documentaries of all time. If you haven't seen it yet look for it on Limewire or Emule or whatever peer-to-peer program you use. It is DEFINITELY worth it any day of the week.

It's not real.

A couple interesting tidbits that I learned from hearing the director speak:

While this was staged - in many circumstances the only people that knew what was going on was the respective store/theaters owner. In the scene where he breaks into the theater, he actually DID hang out behind the movie standup and wait until closing. Aside from his permission to be there BY THE OWNERS he was really honestly breaking in. The safe openings were reenactments, but the ways that he got into each establishment, the ways he did recon, the way he faked being a health dept worker and walked around the store with a camera. The time he got into the grocery store's front office to check out the safe, that was all real.

Maliq (the director/Kaspar Karr) stated that he grew up around people who did this stuff for a living. The ways he showed in the movie were the ways his friends worked and not hollywood BS.

Fascinating all the way around.

reply

Perhaps not but it was still BS.

It's not a documentary, documentaries are not staged (They're not suppose to be) It's a mockumentary. I loved it but it wasn't real.

reply

it never says documentary..its a documentary style film. shot like a documentary but all fake

reply

how can you think it is real?it doesn't say its a documentary.

reply

Of course it was fake, the actors weren't *that* good, I knew it right from the first dialogue. Also: It's not allowed to take part in crimes (or to film them), so they would have to be arrested if it got known.

reply

It was still a good watch even if it was fake. One thing that impressed me was how accurate a lot of the stuff he talked about really is. Like the spark plug thing for instance. We used to tie that *beep* to fishing line and swing them at car windows, and you really can just walk into a grocery store and walk out with w/e you want. Most people just dont have the balls to do it, you'd be surprised how easy it is.

reply

Agreed. They must have had some REAL DEAL guy tell them all that. Only to realize they could never do this movie for real, so it got to be what it has become, leaving in most data they learned..

I realized about 10 minutes in that it was fake, not Kaspar Karr, but the other thief giving the jail cell interviews gave it away-too many actor mannerisms. Although I was absorbed and fascinated with it until the lackluster, tacked-on ending came. It really fell apart in the last 15 minutes after the big score and supposed murder.
