Fantasic Film Making

An intelligent, moving and powerful film. There was more emotion packed into this then you would find in nearly anything churned out by Hollywood.

10/10. A credit to all involved in its production and a very fitting tribute to the people who died.

It's a sad world.

Agreed

However the note at the end saying the British government are refusing the pay off the Chinese money lenders disturbed me. Does the Chinese government not have a duty of care also?

reply

I almost saw it at our local cinema but didnt in the end, but got to see it last night on More4. It made me understand the motives and hardships of the people forced to come over here in this way, and by the end you really care for the characters. There were a couple of times when he laid it on a bit thick and spelt out the point he was trying to make when it would have worked better if it were understated. But it was a good film and the documentry-style feel to it worked well - although not the sort of film you'd want to watch again any time soon.

Ive just read in the trivia section that there was no scripted dialogue, which im suprised at but i guess explains how 'real' it feels at times.

Completely agree. There's so many people in these circumstances. If people can come that far to make a life... Just makes you think how many desperate people are in the world, but really we don't have a clue.

Touching film of a tragic incident. The final scenes as they're lost in the tide not knowing in which direction the shore lay conveyed the urgency and panic they must have felt during those fateful last hours flawlessly.

reply

I don't think the Chinese Government would really care. From what I see on the news snippets, I don't get a sense that the government are really for the people - more like they want to be in control of the people. If they've got restrictions on how may children can be born, I doubt they would really care for its citizens who have abandoned the motherland...

I maybe wrong, it's hard to form an objective opinion on snippets.

reply

they introduced restrictions on the number of children to stop over population and the whole country destroying itself,

not dissimilar to the public smoking ban coming into force in the UK, to try and stop the population destroying itself by giving everyone cancer,

maybe the west would also have a restriction on the number of children if we had not of poisoned and poluted ourselves so much that a lot of us are infertile,

this documentary makes me wonder why no charity organisation gets involved with illegals in the UK or west, they rabbit on about world poverty, sweat shops in the east and these people are only trying to escape that, surely some charity could watch over them or give them advice when they get here,

i praise anyone who risks it all to make a better life for themselves and their family, surely these people deserve a better life, i bet very few of the wests population would be this selfless,

reply

Er.. How can you compare the Smoking ban (which has already come into place in Scotland, the Republic of Ireland and Wales) to China's government policy to take measures in population planning?

reply

I explained my reasoning in the post

reply

well clearly there was no reasoning behind that moronic statement.

anyway, excellent movie and a great eye-opener. pity such a film is very unlikely to ever find a large audience.

The most scary "horror film" I've ever seen, and the worst thing is, it is probably all true.

Someone said something about governments (UK or China?) paying off the money lenders. Why should they? They should lock them up instead!

Yeah, I watched it again last night. I just think it's fantastic film making. We need more films like this. The quality of the acting was superb.

Speaking of Ken Loach, "It's a Free World" is on C4 soon. That looks to be another great piece again looking @ illegal immigration.

There looks like there's a few good pieces coming up on C4:

"It's a Free World" - 24th September, Channel 4, 9pm.

I thought the same thing urabutln. Should a government be virtually blackmailed into paying off these criminals? Surely the Chinese government should lock these individuals up in order to protect their citizens!

How do you think they died, idiot? Overeating, maybe? Getting run over by a train?

How many brain cells do you need to process the information you were given? Let's see, heavy clothing, a strong tide, darkness, extreme cold. Duh.

No, I understand where you are going. I would have thought it obvious what their emotions and feelings would have been. Bearing in mind that the film is a true story (instead of the Hollywood BS of 'based on real events') I feel it would have been disrespectful to pretend to know what the individuals may have been thinking.

"Apart from that, Mrs Lincoln, did you enjoy the play?"

One of the most beautifully striking and memorable films I have ever seen. I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since they aired it on Channel 4 earlier this year. Nick Broomfield never fails to outshine every other British film maker around.

Excellent film. Unfortunately, about a true incident. If unscripted, I'd say it's even better. The acting was superb. I say FIRE all the PROS and just hire the amateurs. They seem to do much better a job at this.

And I'll bet they made this film for pennies on a dollar compared to any film studio. I'm sure the actors in it deserved much better money than they got.

This was just aired on Sundance. I see it's been years, but at least the film has not been forgotten. I do appreciate the indie films often much more than the template-made big studio productions. This was certainly one of them.
