Any one find surrogacy creepy?

I don't mean to say like a judgemental bitch but the whole concept freaks me out a little :S

Anyone anyone else?

reply

Well, it has lead to custody hearings and all that. Remember the Baby M case in the 1980's? I think you have to really make up your mind to do this and not back away. Same with adoption.

reply

Personally, I don't mind sounding judgmental so I'm gonna say it out loud: I consider surrogacy the ultimate act of vanity and arrogance. People will do the craziest things to produce a person that looks like them. It's utter vanity. If you really want to have a baby, adopt an orphan. That is an act of love. If no orphans existed, I would accept surrogacy but this is clearly not the case. how can one spends that much money whilst they can make an existing baby happy? How can they live with themselves?

reply

I cannot say I would ever do surrogacy, mostly because I am certain I could not afford it. But I don't think people who choose it are only doing so out of vanity to have kids that look like them. There is something to be said about wanting to experience pregnancy...creating a life between yourself and your partner, feeling it grow inside of you, going through the pain and the wonderful pay out in the end. Now granted I've only ever been pregnant for a very very short time, but the minute I saw those two pink lines, I fell in love. Don't be so quick to judge.

reply

If you are using a surrogate, how are they experiencing pregnancy?

reply

Whoops, nix that part, I guess I had in vitro on my mind. But I still don't think wanting a biological child is vane. Adoption isn't always an option for people, it can take years that some people may not have.

reply

I've known people who threw all sorts of money at IV or surrogacy and not understood it; but my urge was to be a Mom, not necessarily to be pregnant. Adoption worked for us, but it doesn't work for everyone.

Also (and I know this from experience), a couple may not have personal issues with adoption or race issues, but a close family member might.... are they ready and willing to basically cut a family member out of their lives to protect their child?

reply

its not vanity, its biology. we are programmed to want to pass on our own genes. some people cannot feel maternal/paternal love for children that arent their own. i certainly dont. i dont even like kids who arent my own daughter. if a person is able to pass that sort of motherly love to a child that is not their own flesh and blood then thats a great quality to have, but not everybody has it.

That may be because you haven't raised them. You don't really know them. I can relate to that.

maybe but i dont think so. i was raised with foster brothers and sister, some of them lived as my real brothers and sisters for 10+ years. i just dont care about them all that strongly, not the same way as i care about my real siblings. its not the same as parents who adopt, but its pretty similar. sometimes people just don't bond.

Surrogacy is selfish and inconsiderate of the planet. People should just accept that nature forbids some people to make children. It's called natural population limit. If they can't control their 'urges' they should look at a picture of India or Ethiopia or some other ridiculously crowded third world country.

reply

I don't think you understand what surrogacy is - and what it can do. Say a perfectly healthy woman has an accident that injures her uterus. She can conceive a child, but can't carry him or her to full term. That isn't nature. That's an accident that can prevent TWO people from having one or more children. Bless the incredibly UNSELFISH woman with a healthy uterus who is willing to carry that child.

The world is already populated enough without finding Frankenstein-meets-Rube-Goldberg ways to make more people.
