Who is that woman in Ryu's flashback? *slight spoilers*

Ryu, the one who is an ex-cop, is shown in a flashback busting down the door with another fellow cop and discovering a woman being sodomized by two men. By the shocked look on Ryu's face we assume he knows the woman and has an intimate connection with her... yet the film never explains what the connection is!

Who is she? How are Ryu and her related? Wife? Girlfriend? Sister? What? Did I miss something while watching the movie? I watched the movie twice and still don't know! Help!

the title says 'what happened to Ryu and his wife' ....... I can only assume it was his wife but as you said...we don't exactly know what happened (or if the wife had a condition, since he mentioned something about an indian festival and how people get healed etc)

It was his wife, but the key was that she was pregnant until then. In the very beginning of the flashback, at the end of his conversation with that guy, he says he's going to be a daddy soon or something to that affect.

My theory about the whole situation was that he was trying to get the other guy to set up two henchmen for something, remember he said get me two guys while he was talking to that guy. The guy told Nam (the gang boss) about Ryu being a cop, and he set up two men to rape Ryu's wife, in effect killing his unborn child.

You may have missed that little part of the conversation he had with that guy.

but it doesn't make sense.
if he sees his wife getting raped then,
wouldn't he just shoot the rapist on the spot?
instead he went out from the room,
recalls the conversation he had with his wife,
then goes back in, wait awhile, then only shoot the rapists.

just doesn't make sense.

i can write, but i choose not to.

ashingtray,

i think that the reason he stepped back out was that he was just in too much of a shock at first.

but what i wonder about in the scene is his partner got a phonecall and from his reaction it seemed like he was just told that it was ryu's wife in that room.
thats my take anyway, why else was he trying to get ryu to leave and not enter the room.

it reminded me of in the movie "Seven" at the end when morgan freeman was told in the box was brad pitt's wifes head and how he tried to stop pitt from opening the box.

that's the obvious answer.

but it doesn't make sense if you see
yr wife been raped, and all you do
was just step back from the room,
think back of the past, after a moment,
then only rush in...

if it was my wife, or i'm sure anyone's
wife, if you see someone entering yr wife,
wouldn't you at the very moment make sure
his dick stays out at that very instance?

"i can write, but i choose not to."

i know what you mean. Either I need to watch it again or get a different translation from a different subber.

It didn't make sense to me either, if that was his wife, for him to walk out first, before going beserk.

is it the same girl being raped and the one in his flashback? I'm not sure. But if it was, then maybe she was the wife, or possibly sister.

My best guess is that, he just doesn't like the idea of rape. Someone calls his partner, told him someone is being raped inside. Tries to stop him from seeing it.
He saw it; couldn't handle it. walks out and remembers the condition of the girl she knew; walks back in, angry at the rapists and shoots them.

I haven't seen the film for a while so I'm going on my memory.

Wasn't he a dirty cop? I assumed that when he stepped out, he was grappling with a dilemma: sacrifice the woman* to save himself (his career and his face/reputation) or sacrifice his career to save the woman.

*I thought it was his sister! It was implied his sister had a learning disability. I thought when he was grappling with the dilemma, he might think that after she was raped, she wouldn't tell anyone because she wouldn't know how to. In the end of his dilemma, his humanity came through.
It's possible she was his wife who had a learning disability. It was mentioned earlier that he tried to find a cure for her. After seeing your conversation with the others, I think he might be referring to their inability to have a child.
