While this is based off a true story, it's obvious this movie is more fiction than anything. The writer will have you believe that all marines are savage grunts who (presumably from the dialog, because they are trained to kill) are out for blood. They even decided to throw in a "be robots" quote in the movie. You'd have to be a complete idiot to think marines have no compassion or any sense of humanity. It takes a special kind of crazy and/or stupid to just kill unarmed women and children on sight just because they are in a building. Even if they were given orders to do so, most soldiers would question those orders, as they are not robots and actually have a conscious.

But they did kill all those people. As well as not to judge them, but being in a situation full of guerrillas and shadow enemies in a town of foreigners, stuff like that will happen to almost any army. The enemy plans on that sort of stuff happening because it inflames the locals against the occupiers
