The Rock was miscast here

The whole movie I felt someone like Sam Rockwell would have been better. Nothing against Johnson, but I don't think a traditional ripped action star should have played a tugboat captain scrapping by in a little village in the center of South America. Maybe I kept thinking of Bogart in The African Queen....

reply

TO BE FAIR...SAM ROCKWELL WOULD BE BETTER THAN EVERYONE IN EVERY PART...THE ROCK HAS STRUGGLED TO FIND DEFINING ROLES...THIS IS NO EXCEPTION...BUT THEN DISNEY WOULDN'T HAVE MADE THE MOVIE WITHOUT A HUGE NAME IN THE LEAD.

reply

I'm far from a fan of Dwayne, but I thought his easy going charm was the only thing that kept this movie afloat, (haha).
Everything else was stiff and predictable and forced.

reply

The Rock... keeping things afloat...

I'll allow it.

reply

I agree. Also not a big fan of Dwayne, but he was great here. I think Sam Rockwell would've felt too similar to MacGregor

reply

I agree. He didn't fit. Sam is better than the Rock here, I would dare to say he is Rock-well. But yes, the part needed a Bogart/Harrison/Rockwell kind of man...

reply

Yeah, someone like Scott Foley.

reply

The only reason they picked him was because he looked like a Spaniard (he's actually of mixed race, non of which is of Spanish origins), which fit his character's true identity. That, and he'll do any role for Disney.

Hispanic? WTF are you talking about?

reply

You didn't know The Rock (AKA Dayne Johnson) was Hispanic?

Spoiler Alert!

The boat guy is actually a cursed Spaniard who came with a group of conquistadors 400 years before the story to the jungle to seek out the tree with the magic flowers. The leader of the expedition had his men murder members of the tribe that were guarding the tree. So they got to drink the nectar and become immortal, but the survivors of the tribe cursed them in revenge. None of them can leave the sight of the river, or the jungle will swallow them whole; they will literally become the jungle. Dwayne Johnson's character was part of the expedition and was the only guy who refused to murder innocent natives, despite orders from his commanding officer. That's why he's still alive and living as a river boat captain in the present time of the story, while the others got swallowed by the jungle centuries ago.

reply

Yes, the character Frank Wolff is a Spaniard. Dwayne Johnson is not Hispanic.

reply

Okay, looked it up. He apparently is Samoan, African American, Nova Scotian, and has a bit of Irish in him. Happy? The fact that he has medium skin, dark hair, and dark eyes makes him look very much like a Spaniard from southern Spain.

Now shut the hell up and go whine about something else.

reply

Seems like you're the one who wants to whine about things

"tHe oNlY rEasOn tHeY piCkeD hIm wAs bEcaUse He wAs hIsPanic"

I bet you're the same kind of person who believes you were passed over for promotion because the other candidate was sleeping with the boss, or because they needed to fill a quota, or because they're a brownnoser, or they have incriminating photos, or some other nonsense.

So they cast an actor that met the physical characteristics of the character he's playing. OH MY GOD. THE HORROR!

If you think he was miscast, why not describe why you thought he was miscast? Why throw out accusations about "the only they did" anything? Not only with no evidence to support your claim, but the entire premise was wrong to begin with.

reply

Dude, you made a mistake, doubled down on thee mistake, and then when you finally realize your error, you act like a jerk. Don't be weird about it.

I had to reread the whole thread a few times to make sure I was following correctly. XD
