An Homage to The African Queen?

The boat and the Rock's hat/shirt look alot like Humphrey Bogart's Charlie Alnutt.
And Kate Hepburn wore pants all the time (in real life).
I thought so straight away in the theatre and told as much to my Wife and was promptly SUSHED by her - she's not a movie buff.

Unfortunately, that was about it.

I read that they have stated directly that they were inspired greatly by the African Queen for this story. It does seem pretty obvious that it was a reference point for them.

I actually watched The African Queen for the first time a couple of years ago. I expected more frankly, but it's still cool to see new movies paying homage to the classics.

Yes, TAQ is over-rated imo.
Kate made a great book about the making of it tho. They all got sick filming in Africa except Huston and Bogart because all the liquid they ever drank was Whiskey. The water made everyone else sick.
Lauren Bacall was also there (but not in the movie) and has a good chapter or 2 about it in her auto-biographical book - By Myself

My fav Bogart film is The Petrified Forest

Sounds interesting. I might have to check that out.

More a copy of Pirates of the Caribbean.

> Greedy adventurers rendered undead by a curse.
> They are in pursuit of a McGuffin, currently held by a pretty lady.
> The McGuffin must be used at the hidden secret location to break the curse.
> While the villains and hero battle it out, they are both pursued by a normal third party that complicates the journey along the way.

It's Pirates through and through.

A British female scientist with daddy issues and an inept brother, rejected by the academia because she is a woman and eager to prove herself better than them, goes into the unknown accompanied by a handsome rogue in debt up to his eye balls.

It's Mummy

These are accurate and valid. I don't discount the similarities you listed. However, the plot is closer to Pirates than Mummy. It's certainly a mix of both, which is likely why I enjoyed it. I like both of those movies a great deal.

The pulled parts from lots of good movies, unfortunately taking parts from good movies doesn't mean the end result will be good. It was not a very good movie, it showed promise a few times but failed to deliver. Frankly Dwayne was miscast in the movie. It would have been better with Johnny Depp, Jack Black, or any number of other actors that didn't look like they had been raised on steroids. Sorry but it is simply hard to take Dwayne seriously in any movie, he needs to downsize himself for roles like this.

Makes me glad I never watched Mummy

The Mummy is a very good movie.

Mummy was great. And all great movies get copied

I think when it was new I was in my Auteur phase, and I'm not sure I have ever abandoned this phase.
I look for a little more in movies than Popcorn chewing action and fun.
Of course something like the first Star Wars movie or Indy Jones were great fun, but I got a lot jaded after that and I'd rather see an introspective Indy film or something from a foreign director.
Yes, call me a Snob and a Wanna-Be, whatever, but that's just me.
I did like Brendan Fraser in School Ties (?)

You CAN love movies as an art form AND as a form of fun. Quentin Tarantino is proof of that.

The African Queen was an inspiration for Jungle Cruise at Disneyland. Hence it inspiring the movie as well.
