Nixon 'The Man' questions...

Hello all!

I just finished watching the movie...wow, it was fascinating! A really well-made film...I felt as if I was back in the 70's! 9 out of 10.

Anyway, I was a very young man at the time of the interviews. Being 3 years old, I don't remember any of it of course. So I am curious about a few things regarding Nixon that was brought up in the film...

1) Nixon said that he wanted "To get back where the action was" at one point. I thought that was quite curious coming from a disgraced President. Did Nixon really have a chance at reclaiming his career? (Or did he just think he did?) Let's say for a minute that the interviews went well for Nixon...what was his future plans? What was the best-case scenario politically for Nixon before the interviews?

2) Can someone resign the Presidency and still get elected again? (Was there ANY chance of this happening?)

3) Was the "We're gonna make 'em choke" lines taken from anywhere? Did Nixon ever say this to anybody?

Thank you!!!

1. I think Nixon just meant, in general, rehabilitating his image and becoming a respected elder statesman. Which, in real life, ultimately did happen, though I'm not sure how much impact the interviews themselves had.

2. Technically, yes, but Nixon would have been ineligible via the 22nd Amendment. There's a limit to a President winning two terms of office; two additional years are allowed if a President takes office in the event of his or her predecessor's death. Nixon hadn't served out his term but he was still ineligible. I don't think he actually entertained the thought of doing so.

3. That scene was a fabrication, although it loosely resembles Nixon's general worldview.

"Earth first! Make Mars our bitch!"
