Ron Howard's film style

This is a prime example of a movie that is good, just good. worth watching and worth the money to see at the cinema.

My question however is when is Ron Howard going to make a straight out great film instead of just an endless amount of good ones?

Apollo 13 and The DaVinci Code are examples of other good movies, but not great ones.

Can anyone agree with me on this? I feel like I am never fully thought provoked in any movie he makes.

reply

Dude, Da Vinci Code is one of the cheesiest films in cinema history

reply

i think he's made several great films - A Beautiful Mind, Cinderella Man, Apollo 13, and to a lesser extent, Frost/Nixon.

reply

The THEATRICAL EDITION of 'The Da Vinci Code' is "cheesy", not the Extended Edition.

reply

There's an extended edition?

reply

IMO Apollo 13 is an example of a great movie.

The ‘Da Vinci Code’ is the best move which could have been made from that book! However the original point about Howard is that he is just a good solid director. The studio can rely on him to deliver a good film. I don’t think he is interested in being an Auteur or cutting edge!

I agree with the others, Apollo 13 is a great film, one of the best of the last 20 years.
A Beautiful Mind is great in that it does what almost no film before or since: make mathematics and a mathematician interesting. I still find the scene in the bar with how the guys should choose the women one of the best I've ever seen.
About 15 years ago I had a friend who was a math teacher. She said that one of her wishes was that Hollywood would make a good film about math. She simply knew of none. When Beautiful Mind came out she was ecstatic.

I see what you are getting at,
but making a good film is no small achievement.
Ron Howard tells a good story, makes good films.
Creating a classic, masterpiece, great film
is very difficult.
Maybe he likes to play it safe.

Ron Howard also knows how to end a film better than Spielberg.

Is Ron Howard a great filmmaker? A maker of great films? No. I don't find him brilliant. But I find him bankable. He can bring out great performances in his actors and he knows how to deliver the goods.

I refuse to change my position just because you use logic

He's the Rob Reiner of this generation.

reply

Rob Reiner has a waaaay better filmography than Howard IMO.

reply

I always regard Howard as an efficient director but not a great film maker despite the Oscar.

Its that man again!!

His style is practically making a very cinematic and entertaining film, so that's why he has quite a bunch of good film and a few great ones, but he'll never make a masterpiece, he's just no aiming to that, his style is to tell a story the most entertaining way possible.

reply

Me thinks The Dilemma could be his masterpiece.

reply

I think Frost/Nixon is a great film. Night Shift is also great - a forgotten gem.

"When is Ron Howard going to make a straight out great film?"

Since it usually takes a great director to make a great film, and Howard certainly is not some great cinematic mind, the answer would be "never". I don't also think most of his films - and certainly not Da Vinci Code - are "good", exactly; more like barely passable. As for his "style"... well, he doesn't really have one - he's a competent, efficient craftsman in a Classic Hollywood tradition, but that's about it. No auteurish flourishes to be detected.
