Is the original Portuguese script as god awful as the dubbed version would imply?
Some of the scenes I thought they must have outright made the dialogue up--
'3 men? Eating dinner together? It wouldn't look right'
Who says that?
It was like they took the voiceovers from an old Italian movie and dropped them onto this..
If I am wrong and this movie is as bad as the dubbing then it's a turd
That's the subtitled line too...
And as for who would say that, almost any hetero guy who chases women. In that culture, it just doesn't happen. You can tell from when the landlord walks by and says "don't say he's your nephew, only old fags say that" that the perception of a guy eating dinner with some kids would be off.
I caught the middle part of the dubbed version on Encore late one night. The next day I decided to watch it On Demand and they had the Subtitled version. Personally I prefer the subtitled version better. It just seems far more authentic than the dubbed one.
And I agree with the other poster. The 3 men comment wasn't that out of the ordinary.

You totally massacare this (well, practically any) movie by watching the dubbed version. Portugese is such a cool language, and the way they talk lends a lot to this movies charm.
I will never get why people (americans in particular) have trouble with subtitles. A lot of nuances in other languages and a lot of their beauty just cannot be dubbed. This goes both ways, making someone listen to a german dub ov an American movie is a crime against humanity if you ask me.
Because they have a hard enough time dealing with English, let alone a foreign language where they have to employ their limited reading skills.

Many of the more enlightened Americans admit that this is so. A generalisation, of course, but it certainly holds water whether you like it or not.
You have only to look at any thread on these boards where people talk about dubbing vs subbing to see that this is an accurate statement.
I used to despise subtitles. It wasn't for a lack of reading comprehension, let's face it, most movies don't employ a high level of dialog. That would be the case with this film as well. The problem is reading and watching at the same time. It can be difficult, especially in a fast paced movie.
I love subtitles now. It took some time but eventually I was able to read and watch.
But why are they more common in Europe? Well, there's a large amount of countries in a region that speak many different languages. In the US, we only have the one. Sadly, we do not import many movies, we just remake them in English (think Asian horror).
It's not as simple as stupidity.
