Pierre gay?

Did anyone think that the character of Pierre was just a tad bit on the homosexual side...?

reply

why?
because he was romantically interested in/involved with no less than three women during the course of this film??!
my apologies if I sound patronizing, but please do try to refrain from applying stereotypes so freely and carelessly; not every professional dancer is gay.

Many guys can look gay because of their style. I know guys who might be gay by their looks, while being not.

reply

No, i didnt think that he was gay because of his profession, i just felt that the way the actor played Pierres' character made him seem like a closeted gay, and that could be a reason as to why he was so unsuccessful in his love life. i wasnt out to offend anyone, just pondering on something 'controversial'...

reply

Unless I don't get what you're saying, I don't see why being gay would make him "so unsuccessful in his love life".

reply

I meant unsuccessful with WOMEN in his love life, i probably wasnt that clear.

reply

Ok I see what you mean. Well it's possible but I think it's unlikely. The only clues about his sexuality make him heterosexual.

reply

He wasn't romantically unsuccessful. What gave you that idea?
He was terminally ill! That's why women (and most of his friends) weren't coming around.

And why on earth would a young gay dancer in Paris be dans le placard?

reply

Except from the fact that he is a professional dancer (so..??), there's nothing, absolutely nothing in this movie to suggest that he might be gay. Why come up with such a question?

"... a bit on the homo side..." What a formulation! You should get rid of your problem with gay people. And worry more about heart conditions and morale of your favorite characters, whether they are gay or not.

reply

No.

Of course, he looked a bit fey in his dancer get-up.
But, he expressed sexual interest in four different women (The girl across the street, Khadihja, his ex and the frumpy chick from his sister's job.)

reply

Just because Treasure Juniper made a comment about the movie character that doesn't make him homophobic. Please people don't try to be so self-righteous and assume someone is bigoted just because he suggested Pierre might be gay. It's ridiculous since it is a movie after all.

reply

lol, i do realise that he ISNT gay, i just thought he was a little on the feminine side and was wondering if anyone else noticed.

p.s and youd be surprised at how many gay friends and relations that i have, so im not being anti anything! honest!

reply

T. Juniper,

You're not homophobic. Note taken. Still, your "feminine side" explanation is puzzling, to say the least. A friendly suggestion: talk about another movie, or something else.

reply

TroubledWorld, why don't you go and take your comments somewhere else, nobody cares!!!

reply

Yes. I noticed it, but it didn't seem out of the ordinary in a character who is an artist, especially a dancer. I would think that being in touch with one's feminine side--and being utterly comfortable with it--would be prerequisite to becoming a professional dancer.

Ultimately, the clearest indication of his heterosexuality (or at least bisexuality leaning heavily toward heterosexuality) is that when he thought that he was going to die, he sought the comfort of a woman. IMO, that is an unassailably straight reaction to tragedy (or any other eventuality for that matter.)

reply

TJ, I also had to constantly remind myself that he wasn't gay, so no, you're not the only one. I was confused by his whole sexuality. He was definitely making my gaydar go off, especially with the way he dressed. That t-shirt shirt he was wearing is something you'd see in Greenwich Village.

I asked the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

reply

Have you ever been to Paris? I'm sure they're lots of straight guys wearing those t-shirts over there.

The minute I saw the thread title, I knew there would be an ambush of homophobe-ophobes attacking the OP even though nothing offensive was said. If the OP had asked "Do you think Pierre worked for Chanel? Because he had good fashion sense" nobody would care. But if you ask something like "Do you think Pierre was gay? Because he had good fashion sense", prepare for the onslaught!

I thought the director was deliberately giving Pierre qualities that might be construed as gay. It adds complexity to the character, and like the OP said, perhaps it explains why he has trouble with women. In the movie he says the happiest moment of his life was his first dance with a girl, Elisabeth. Him being a dancer, we can assume he has danced with hundreds of girls since, but none had an impact like the first. This could be for many reasons, but in this case perhaps it's because Pierre's 6th grade dance was before he became torn in his sexuality, trying to live the life of a heterosexual whilst he was a homosexual in his heart. Elisabeth becomes a Citizen Kane "rosebud" kind of thing. So yes, I like to think that Pierre was closeted gay. It makes him seem more interesting to me.

reply

i also thought he might have been gay or bi.

i dunno if it was intended or if it was meant to be anything or it was just the way the actor played it but i felt at times he came across as gay. but only at points so i can see why other people thought so too.

reply

Do all dancers have to be gay?

So did he actually dance in the movie?

reply

I wish he were gay. He was hot.

reply

lal dunno why everyone has to take it sooooo seriously. i know he's not gay, he just is a little...
And yeah, he is hot!

reply

i agree that he is absolutely hetero and extremely hot but i do think the director was playing with us. quite a bit of time passes and stories are presented before pierre's sexuality is established and i believe the actor and the director made choices to challenge the stereotype and the audiences interpretation. that said, because someone (treasurejuniper) adds up certain jigsaw pieces to the wrong conclusion doesnt mean they should be made to feel bad about it.

reply

This is exactly the point. I agree with the initial post, that he quite gives the impression of a gay character in the first part of the movie, and it is a developmental point of the character. So I agree that there is no point in all those comments and the poster is definitely not alone in this view.

reply

I agree with your rationale for thinking that.
