did the main character have any parents

I guess she had working/fairly absent parents, adding to her loneliness and wandering around and all. But still, they weren't even mentioned once, were they? The friend mentioned her mom, and Floraine's parents were mentioned, but not Marie's. It was like watching Charlie Brown or something.
